"The Big Apple is a bit sweeter because of the rich sounds of Hilary Hawke"-CM, Deli Magazine, 2009
Americana Uk says- “Gospel, Old Timey, Bluegrass, 70's musical and Spiritual swim in her head and get displayed for your delectation and delight...I hope she ventures to these shores soon."-Andy Williams
"A jugband exuberance, [with] an indie rock feel"-Donald Nitchie, Banjo newsletter 2009
"Hilary Hawke's Goodwill is real music. From dark and delicious to fun and frantic, banjo babe Hawke has more personality in her little finger than most do in their large bodies,"-David Malachowski, reviewer Daily Freeman (Hudson Valley) 2009
"Hilary Hawke isn't your average composer, there's something in her head that's just not normal, thank goodness, and listening to GOODWILL is going to make you one of those travelers who gets caught by the strange refrains slipping out past the tentflap, drawing ears thenceward...and then body, like sailor to siren, stupified and enchanted, unable to look back...by the time you figure it out, you're a part of the pack."-Mark S. Tucker, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
Hilary Hawke's songwriting was kindled in the Adirondacks regions of upstate NY, playing at many open mics in Saratoga and Potsdam and being influenced by the thriving folk scene that only the cold mountain weather brings together! i.e., fireside jams and song-swapping.
This led to fingerpicking and the love of banjo players that played a mix of old time/country/folk music, like Pete Seeger and Dock Boggs. After coming to NYC in 2004 Hilary focused primarily on banjo playing with many wonderful bands (Jan Bell, Maybelles, M Shanghai stringband, Rosy Nolan Band, Hawke & Owl) and found her current bandmates/best friends this way!
Ian Riggs, Jacob Tilove, Brian Geltner, all make the band sound spectacular and are each acclaimed for their own songwriting and performing!
