Til The Stars Show
Aliens and Angels
Press play on the recent self-titled release from Canada's newest contribution to rock, and you'll quickly discover that the greatest promotional tool in JOHNNY CONFIDENCE's arsenal is his music. To read this bio is to merely tug at errant strands of information from the sweater that is JOHNNY CONFIDENCE . But if you have already heard his music, you are already a prisoner to their charm and you simply must see how this sweater unravels. Very well:
Their history is a collection of loose folk tales passed along over the years. Nobody knows when they arrived on the scene; they were just sort of everywhere one day, like the Rubik's Cube or those exotic hand-soaps made from various kitchen products. But unlike lavender-oatmeal soap, the music of the ubiquitous Jay Neilson, (the sole member and Wizard behind JOHNNY CONFIDENCE's curtain), is a soaring tribute to life and love, and the musical connections between the two.
Jay Neilson (the "he" in "they") began his musical career at a young age, touring extensively with his musical family, ostensibly in the Danny Partridge, bass-player roll. He cut his teeth on showboats, clubs, festival stages and all manner of venues, logging miles up and down the continent.
Fast-forward several years, and we find Jay on his own, writing elegant anthems that coquettishly court the radio, while always pleasing critics. Swish his songs around in your mouth and you might taste the satiric wit of Bright Eyes or the hesitant melancholy of Elliott Smith. Absorb the music into your bloodstream, and you'll experience the intoxicating murmur of Johnny Cash, or the sobering melodies of The Beatles.
Multi-instrumentalist Jay Neilson caught the songwriting addiction some years ago, and continues to expand his already prolific catalogue of music with every minute that ticks by. He has done some film-score work (Chronic Zing's "Sausagehead," or "Bill Across America" to name a couple), he fills in as stunt-bassist for up-and-comers Berlington, and he continues to ply his trade as the sole planet in JOHNNY CONFIDENCE's musical orbit.
JOHNNY CONFIDENCE's latest opus is a self-titled 12+ song LP that plays like a songwriter's how-to manual, and avoids the self-important posturing of so many young artists today. Songs like "Don't Leave Me Julie, Here," and "Aliens and Angels" move with a cadence and sophistication that belie the album's modesty. The standout upbeat shuffle, "Stuck on Rewind," is a self-fulfilling prophecy that will all but disable the "back" button on iPods around the globe as Jay laments, "She took out my heart when she left me/ it's not a joke, man it killed me/ amazing grace, wretch like me/I could hardly breathe at all/ dumped me in a shopping mall/cryin in a bathroom stall."
For Jay Neilson, quality is a habit and his music can be habit-forming. As this sweater unravels and the naked shape of JOHNNY CONFIDENCE is made manifest, pause for a minute and listen. While the silence builds up around you, and the hunger and anticipation grows along with it, you will forget all 516 words of this bio as, shaking, you reflexively press play.
