Sounds Like "There's been a rush on at the moment, a rush to find the next woman singer songwriter.... To my mind, none have come close to being as emotionally involving or genuine as multi instrumentalist Juliana Meyer. The quality of the music on this album is simply divine. Juliana is a genuine talent. 'Holding up the Sky' is rich in instrumental and vocal ideas and all of them work. Juliana has made an album that will make you weep and laugh at the same time. Let Juliana make your summer complete." Ollie Cornish, Music-News.com

“Sincerity, originality and variety can be hard to come by these days, but they all show their face in Juliana’s music, and her seductive manner of engaging with her audience” Ros Stanley, OxStu Review

"Juliana not only looks like an angel she sings like one live and can talk!! She's definitely a star in the making. I've had the pleasure to interview Amy Winehouse, Katherine Jenkins and Katie Melua just before they 'broke' and I predict Juliana is heading in the same direction"
- Sadie Nine, BBC Radio Essex

“Rich and evocative……What sets this record out from most debuts is the eclectic musical craftsmanship that has gone into it” Neil Jones, Evening Gazette

"The term “singer-songwriter” doesn’t really do justice to the powerhouse known as Juliana Meyer. Meyer is clearly on the verge of joining Katie Melua and Natasha Bedingfield in the pantheon of sweet-voiced young British stars." Kate Griffin, OxfordBands.com

“Juliana brings musical richness to live performances through brilliant inventions on the guitar – outstanding player” Paul Chi, founder of Healthy Concerts.

“Refreshingly original. Juliana’s music is a calm and haunting, slightly folk-ish, blast of Albion. Well produced and engaging the album is melodically strong. …undeniable song-writing talent” Top of The Ox Review

“Quirky guitar licks complement her strong lyrics and catchy melodies” Grapevine

"Juliana's amazing voice guided the chilled out and beautiful performance, which was extremely well received by the public." Surface Unsigned Festival

"There are parts of "Holding Up The Sky" that make up for the lack of Summer so far. Multi-instrumentalist-producer-performer-songwriter Juliana Meyer has delivered... a cocktail that starts of smooth, but delivers a wicked kick." Fatea

"The album is beautifully arranged...a dynamic and evocative collection of calm yet powerful acoustic tracks, each paying tribute to the musical talents – vocal and instrumental – of this incredible artist. The opening track reminds me of Dido, but I think Juliana’s voice is far better... clear as crystal, expressive and compelling. ...empowering yet soothing – a gorgeous combination." Oxide Radio

"Powerful lyrics and clever melodies... a very talented entertainer with a good image and songs to boot. Value for money? We should say so!!...." Tony Kavanagh, The Winelight Club

"Juliana's commitment to her music is to be admired. Children In Need will cap a great year for Juliana Meyer" Stephen Foster, Evening Star

"Juliana is a breath of fresh air. Her faultless voice has the evocative undertones of a young Kate Bush, but with a sweetness that can’t help but make you feel like the smile fairy has just waved her magic wand. You could hear a pin drop throughout her set." AD, The Melting Pot

“Sky the limit for Juliana…all-rounder rising songwriter and musician”
Essex County Standard

“One of our leading Singer-Songwriters” Stephen Foster, BBC Radio Suffolk

"Great talent: guitarist and singer destined for stardom"
East Anglian Daily Times

Biography

JULIANA MEYER BIOGRAPHY

Prizewinning songwriter Juliana Meyer plays a fresh fusion of acoustic pop jazz, whilst her eclectic musical influences radiate through in her unusual song-writing style. Beautiful soaring vocals over quirky guitar licks or emotive piano complement her strong lyrics and catchy melodies.
Juliana Meyer is a singer, songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist.

In 2007 Juliana Meyer released her self-produced Debut Album ‘Holding Up The Sky', which has been received to critical acclaim. In addition to writing and arranging the 12 track album, Juliana performed on most of the instruments (vocals, guitars, piano, bass, cello, violin, double bass, mandolin, glockenspiel and drum programming).

Juliana Meyer was nominated for Best Solo Artist and Best Original Act in the TopOfTheOx Awards. She studied at Oxford University, where she won the Mapleton Bree Arts Prize for her song-writing. A prolific song-writer, she is ready to record her follow up second album. Amongst her other compositions she has written a Cambodian piece for a Green Elephant Travel advert, a song for the Oxford-Cambridge Boatrace where she represented Oxford in a 'sing-off', the soundtrack for an award-winning play, and most recently was commissioned to write music for Holocaust Memorial Day, which she performed with Capella Nova Choir (who were recently heard on BBCRadio4) at the Ipswich Corn Exchange.

A keen performer, in 2007 she launched her debut album at a sold-out showcase gig at the world famous 100 Club on London's Oxford Street, performing alongside her 9-piece band. She was chosen to headline at the Bush Hall's Buzz Night Festival, and toured the UK promoting the album. Following the success of the album she was invited to perform her songs at the BBC Gala Show for BBC TV1's Children In Need, at The Ipswich Regent, alongside music legends.

This summer Juliana and her band have been invited to perform at many of the UK Summer Festivals, including Glastonbury Festival, a headline slot on The Barn Stage at Beach Break Live Festival, and on the Main Stage at RockNRoots Festival. She also performed recently with UK Chart Toppers Oystar at the Houses of Parliament.

Early Music Years
With a varied musical background, Juliana started with a classical foundation, learning the cello. Owing much to her roots growing up in South Africa, she appeared on SABC TV with her Suzuki group at age 5, when she first became hooked on the live rush of performing. At age 10 she sang solo harmony at a 20 000 people strong peace rally alongside PJ Powers and thousands of school children performing the song 'Tranquility' written by her school teacher Margi Kopping, promoting peace and harmony in the new South Africa. They also recorded the song for radio, and performed the song on KTV. Juliana was fortunate to receive cello lessons from the world renowned cellist Marion Lewin and was playing with the Witwatersrand Youth Orchestra before reaching her teenage years. At 13 she performed in a string trio for F W de Klerk, alongside her brother and the famous South African composer Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolf (who at the request of Nelson Mandela arranged the new South African Anthem).

Moving to England as a teenager, Juliana began performing and writing music in bands, on vocals and electric guitar. Her band Rocking Horse released their debut album The Siren in 2002 and The Confession EP in 2003. They performed for audiences of up to 10 000, had a flurry of media attention with articles in the Guardian, Telegraph, Sun and Daily Star, making headlines in local papers, radio and TV, and were featured in the Channel 4 program "Can't Buy Me Love", aired in 2002.

As a classical cellist Juliana has performed in Orchestras at the Royal Festival Hall, for The Queen in Bury St Edmund's Park as part of her Jubilee Tour, a solo on German TV, as well on orchestral tours to Czechoslovakia, Italy and Germany.

Welcome to my myspace!
I started performing pretty much since I could stand... I went on TV at the age of 5 playing violin with my Suzuki Group and since then have been hooked on the live rush of performing!

My greatest love is songwriting - for me songs are raw expression of emotions that at times can't just be said in words.

I am a DIY artist and have been overwhelmed by the response and support you all have shown towards my music... What started as an emotional outlet for my own resolve has become a way of life for me!

My musical journey has been varied, from performing for the Queen on her Jubilee Tour, to playing festivals crowds of 10 000, to putting out a record on my own label, to singing at a 2000 strong peace rally in the 'New South Africa', to commissions for adverts, plays and documentaries, to name only some of the adventures.

From stepping stone to stepping stone I am continuously inspired by our world around us, and I hope to get back into the studio soon to record all the songs which have been bubbling away, and sneaking their way into my live shows.

Thank you for your support and if you would like to help in any way, please get in touch...

David Franks: Walkabouts Verse

Oct 21 2009 10:38 AM

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
