Does Your Retirement Portfolio (or lack thereof) Stand Up to the Changing Times?

The reason I started this MySpace profile is because I found myself approaching retirement AND seriously doubting whether my financial portfolio would carry me for another 25 to 40 years. I wanted to provide a forum for Hope for others like me in this same situation!

With the current state of the economy being on the downswing and the cost of health care ever rising, the well positioned portfolio of even a few years ago is not what is recommended for today. Couple that with the marvel of today’s health care technology and the technology on the horizon, we could well live to be 100 or more. But with what quality of life! Can I afford to retire period much less retire wealthy?

If you are anything like me, Health, Wealth and Wisdom are paramount in the future you envision for yourself.

I am now part of team of Work of Home Millionaires and well on my way to increasing my Financial Portfolio, decreasing the time I spend working, and Creating the Lifestyle of My Dreams with full confidence of having the financial freedom I desire in retirement and actually get to retire!

I created this MySpace profile to meet and network with other baby boomers (and those enlightened younger folks) who find themselves in a similar position, so I could share my experience and journey and to help you secure your financial future also. Before I get into all the details … let me tell you a little bit more about me.

Who is this Dr. Jan Brown?

I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, Utah, Montana and Washington. At 18, I ventured off to college at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, a mountain girl in a big flat city. Woe what a culture shock! But that is another story. Ten years later I left with a Ph.D. in physics.

I spent the next 14 years in industry (living in New England and Texas) working in physics and technology, being an intrapreneuer -- innovating management strategies for my companies -- and having a grand time. I really enjoyed what I was doing, but …

I wanted more from life!

I really wanted to travel for pleasure (not just for work) and experience other cultures. I wanted the time to do it. I wanted time to play, bike, hike, rollerblade, read, photograph, become a wood turner, and to pursue more of what life had to offer.

So I went back to school – at the University of Texas in Austin this time – and got a Masters in Business Administration. Why you might ask? This gave me the confidence to become an entrepreneur and create my own consulting practice in technology management. Coincidentally, I graduated just as the parent company of my company closed my division and prepared to sell the rest.

What a time to escape!

For the last 16 years I have traveled, trained, lectured, and consulted all over the United States, Canada, and Japan. While I owned my own business and was living more of the life I envisioned for myself, I was still trading time for money – there are only so many billable hours in a day after all. Further, as an independent consultant there are no employee retirement plans or matching funds for your 401(k).

If you are anything like me, some of the funds that could have gone into the investment portfolio got used for other things such as kid’s education, support of grandparents and parents, travel, and other of life’s necessities and contingencies.

The search began ...

Continuing doing what I was doing was comfortable. It would get me part way to where I wanted to be, but it was NOT going to increase my investment portfolio enough to give me the financial and time freedom or the lifestyle I wanted to be able to retire worry free. I needed to do something different.

Seeing the explosive growth of Network Marketing, I tried a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) nutrition company at the behest of a friend. While I like being healthy and I liked the products, I could not get behind the business model. Without that belief, I could not with integrity offer it to my friends and family. Needless to say, this was not my road to increased financial freedom.

So I failed at MLM …

THEN I came across Robert Kiyosaki‘s book Rich Dad’s Cashflow Quadrant – Rich Dad’s Guide to Financial Freedom. This book totally changed how I viewed my business and my financial portfolio and set me on the road to finding an alternate business that would enable me to realize the time and financial freedom and lifestyle I desired.

It took me about 10 years (I know some of us are slower than others). There are a gazillion –that’s a technical term for a huge number – opportunities with more sprouting up every day. However, there are only a few real business models out there, lots of products and an infinite amount of hype! Quite a mountain of stuff to sift through, but sift and sort I did and ...

I finally found an online business opportunity with a product that I can really believe in – A company in alignment with my personal goals of wealth creation, education, and well being.

I am now part of a team of work-at-home-millionaires and well on my way to creating the lifestyle of my dreams, building my financial portfolio, decreasing the time I was expecting to have to work, and confident of having the financial freedom I desire in retirement and actually get to retire!

The Major Criteria:

Unique Products - with high demand in the marketplace that you can believe in
Company Management – real people you can talk to, a real business plan for all to see, and a company that gives back to the community
Lucrative Compensation Plan – that pays you upfront and provides an incentive for you to train your team
Marketing System – that is proven, duplicatable, and fits your abilities and interests or that you are willing to learn
Team Training and Support – multiple channels for training that fit you, and real people who will help and support you

These criteria and my videos will serve you well as you explore my business or any other business opportunity, for that matter.

One of the most important things to know is that if you are really interested in creating a business for yourself that will allow you to retire wealthy and realize your dreams, it won’t happen overnight and it will require work!
