Even though I am biased having grown up in the 80s, I still firmly believe that decade produced some of the best music ever. The advent of the inexpensive synthesizer gave greater freedom to musicians and that combined with New Wave fashion and style created some truly fantastic bands and artists.
Sadly, with 80s nostalgia and a proliferation of "Greatest Hits of the 80s" compilations, most people only know the Number One hits of the most successful bands. And God help the performer who only had one popular song despite an extensive catalog and gets lumped into the One-Hit-Wonder category!
I wish people would be a little more open-minded when it comes to New Wave music and listen to tracks that might not have been on the radio or MTV all the time. There are thousands of fantastic songs with fun hooks, danceable beats and clever lyrics that would have people bouncing on the dancefloor if they only gave them a chance.
When I DJ I love to play a lot of that terrific music, despite the fact that many people say my tastes are too obscure. I know I am not the only person who feels this way, and my goal is to play the tracks for the others out there like me who lament that most 80s clubs play the same songs (usually in the same order!) every week.
That isn't to say I can't play the more popular songs too, because usually they were popular for a reason - they are good! If I can play a combination of fun music that appeals to fans of New Wave and have people thrilled to hear songs they haven't heard in 25 (oh my god!) years then I am happy.
In addition to New Wave, I also love to mix in Gothic, Industrial, Synthpop, Post-Punk and contemporary electro, a lot of which sounds like it could have come out in the 80s anyway!
There are also so many awesome new remixes of New Wave songs coming out that give them a fresh, modern sound, perfect for the dancefloor. What annoys me is when there is an excellent remix MUSICALLY, but it removes almost all the lyrics! I prefer a full vocal remix of a song, so what I love to do is take the new mix and layer in the original vocals and create my own full-vocal mix. The songs I have in my profile are all mixes I have put together to create better, vocal versions. I hope you enjoy them!
Besides DJ'ing, I also make continuous-mix CDs in a variety of genres. Everything is beat-matched and set so that you can just hit play and dance for over an hour. Send me a note if you are interested in some sample track listings, or if you have a specific theme and you want a custom-mixed CD yourself.
Lately I have started DJing from a laptop computer, and no longer have to lug around heavy boxes of records, or cases full of CDs. This allows me to travel with minimal baggage, so if you are looking for a New Wave DJ who isn't just going to play the same old songs you hear all the time, then book me for your next New Wave, Gothic, Industrial or Electro party!
This is a very small part of my insane record collection.
I know, I totally need to! This year has been hectic though. Cal keeps bugging me (in a good way) to come over too! Glad the Wierd night was fun! Everyone looks great in their pics with Andy!
