Joe Nolan is a rare presence. To witness his live performances is to know that this young man was born to be a singer songwriter. Passion and music ooze from the very core of his being. For the past few years in the Edmonton area, audiences have been captivated and wowed by this young man’s genuine performances. Joe is instantly ‘likable’ and presents a show that is real and sincere.
He writes songs with the deftness of Neil Young, and critics compare his guitar work to the complexity and virtuosity of Bruce Cockburn. A special talent indeed. Testament to Joe’s prowess as an up and coming musician of note and influence, was the ‘buzz’ he created at this year’s Edmonton Folk Music Festival (2008). Selected from all the performers and workshop performances over the four day festival, the Penguin Eggs Folk/Roots magazine voted Joe as one of the top three singer songwriters of that prestigious festival.
Citing Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Neil Young as major influences of his work, Joe’s sound is unlike any other. His songs are a unique blend of his own perspectives and insights of many of the world’s current woes. Critics often call him an ‘old soul’ and say his lyrics ‘mature way beyond his years’.
His debut CD, Pocket Dreams, produced by Jann Arden’s bass player, Mike Lent, is an impressive collection of 16 original songs that will stand the test of time. Easy to listen to, this CD provides more and more with each listen. The depth and richness of Joe’s songs continuously unravel and provide nuggets of wisdom that touch and connect with people of all ages. His voice and phrasing spellbind and often leaves one wanting more.
With too many credits and awards to list, Joe has helped open for the likes of Canadian rocker, Kim Mitchell, and Sarah McLachlan’s guitar player, Sean Ashby. He has shared the stage with many, including Juno award winner, Bill Bourne, and is looking forward to opening with world renowned slide guitarist, Ellen McIlwaine, this Fall.
Every so often, a young artist arrives on the music scene and his audience instinctively knows that he is destined to contribute significantly to the rich tapestry of music and musicians that preceded him. Though only 18 years of age, such is the case for Joe Nolan. Watch for him.
