Jan Hammer (the best solo synth player ever), Billy Cobham, John McLaughlin and anyone else who played with Mahavishnu Orchestra, like Jean-Luc Ponty. Jeff Beck, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.
Kraftwork, Soft Machine, ELP, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Soft Machine.
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Bobby Hutcherson, Ahmad Jamal, Monk. I used to be a jazz DJ and have like 4000 jazz songs in my Ipod.
The newer guys I like include Courney Pine, Mark Whitfield, Nicholas Payton, Brad Mehldau, and Joshua Redman. Had the pleasure of interviewing Redman and Whitfield - those guys are great.
As for pop and rock the list is pretty long as well but I'll just name a few:

Sounds Like
The newest music from LambBone is a cross between jazz fusion and techno. It used elements of 1970's fusion with 21st Century technology.
He plays solo and everything is in real time. He uses loops, pedals, and keyboards to create a huge sound. When Lamb plays live, it is hard to believe the sound is coming from a single musician.
John J. Lamb of Fairfield, CT also goes under the name "LambBone."

He is currently working on some new music with elements of jazz fusion, techno, dance, and experimental electronics. That follows the 2008 release of "Wild Man, "the fourth solo CD from Lamb.
