Flores began attending the gym at four years old and watched his father Frank Flores train older brothers and assist Olympic coach Ken Adams. After graduating from high school in Missouri , the all state football/ track & field athlete attended BYU. Flores became a missionary in Mexico for two years living in one of the poorest areas and helped build houses and help the less fortunate. Flores trained where Julio Caesar Chavez trained as a child in Culiacan . After watching Flores hand out numerous beatings in sparring sessions, the locals began calling him "Peligroso" meaning "dangerous".
