RIP OG Style I’ve just received word that Houston hip hop pioneer Eric “OG Style” Woods passed away yesterday due to complications stemming from a brain hemorrhage. Woods, pka The E, was one of the first acts signed to Rap-a-Lot (at the time OG Style was a duo including producer Big Boss, who also passed about a year ago). Their shamefully out of print 1991 debut, I Know How To Play ‘Em, is an overlooked boom bap classic that would have even the staunchest of southern rap haters nodding his head. OG Style was one of the most influential rap groups ever to come out of or represent Houston as well as Texas. They helped put Rapalot Records and the H-Town rap scene of the hip-hop map, and I as well as any other Houston MC should be eternally grateful for that. They helped to open doors and create opportunities that future generations are still able to take advantage of. Also, E was a great friend and mentor to myself as well as Pimp. His advice at different times in my career was truly priceless, and I held him in high regards not only as an artist but as a man. It is again a dark time in Houston, because we have truly lost a legend and leader. E, along with Big Boss(who by the way was the original producer of “One Day” ), will be missed dearly, but their legacy lives on due to the catalog of great music they let behind. Oh, by the way, these songs ARE BETTER than anything UGK ever did. This is the music that built us, and without OG STYLE, there would be no UGK. I not only worked with OG on his last CD, Return of the Game, which Bun and H-Town legend K-Rino did a legendary track with OG, but I grew up with him.
