In Japan Nov.23 is Labor Thanksgiving Day, a second national holiday in this month. It became a holiday in 1948 as a dy for citizens to express gratitude to one other for work done throughout the year and for the fruits of those labors.
Labor thanksgiving day(勤労感謝の日 Kinro Kansha no Hi in Japanese) is actually a modern name for an ancient ritual called Niinamesai(新嘗祭 Harvest Festival). In this ritual, the Emperor makes the seson's first offering of freshly harvested rice to the gods and then partakes of the rice himself. The history of Niinamesai goes back hundreds years ago. The first written account on the ritual is found in the Nihon Shoki(the Chrocicle of Japan), one of the oldest histories dating from 720 which says that a Niinamesai took place in November 678. The origin of the ritual is believed to be much older, more than 2000 years ago when rice cutivation was first trabsmitted to Japan.
Nawadays Niinamesai ritual is held at at the Ise Grand Shrine and related shrines throughout Japan. At the Ise Grand Shrine the ritual is peformed by the Imperial emboy dispatched by the Emperor who dedicates the meal called Oomike 大御饌.to the gods.

I hope you had a great weekend.
First of all let us see this funny baby and laugh !
Let me talk about recent important event for Japanese people.
November 12 was The 20th Anniversary of the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor and Commemorative ceremony was held with Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress in attendance at the Imperial Hotel and in the evening at the Double Bridge of Imperial Palace the Emperor and the Empress respoded to enthusiastic celebrations from many people who gathered in Imperial Palace Plaza. The emperor gave an address on this occasion which I was very impressed, especiall by the Emperor's mention that we must not forget that present-day Japan is built upon those huge sacrifices of WW2 and immesurable effors of people for after war reconstruction and pass this history on accurately to those born after the war.
please see here for the Emperor's address if you don't mind

Here in Tokyo Sunday today is also very cold and we had cold rain in the morning, so I flinched at the mornig rain and felt reluctant to go out and stayed all day at home. It is very unusual for me to stay at home on weekend, both on Saturday and Sunday. haha
Here it is getting colder and colder every day and soon we can eonjoy beautiful coolour canges of tree leaves to autumnal tints. My favourite scene of Japanese autumn is in Kyoto. My honeymoon was going to Kyoto for 3 nights, long about 30years ago. Our wedding was on November 3rd and I remember we enjoyed Kyoto's brethtakingly beautiful autumnal tints at various temples and shrines. Today I found many beautiful photos of Kyoto 舞妓 maiko girls with autumnal tints. Combination of maiko and autumanl leaves seems to me one of Japanese autumn beauties.
I hope you're having a happy weekend and starting a great new week.

How are you ?
From Sep 22nd till 24th I went to City of Aizuwakamatsu and participated in the famous historical parade which was held on 23rd. as the hilight event of Aizu autum festival.
Every year we, members of Hino Shinsengumi Association are invited to this festival as one of parade participant group. As usual in parade I played a role of holder of Shinsengumi flag 誠. I enjoyed the full day parade and felt very honoured to be in the spectacular samurai parade of about 500 people clad in traditional costumes from many periods in Aizu history.
I'm thinking posting a blog on thi sparade later.
I hope you're having a nice weekend.

How are you ?
I'm now enjoying my consecutive 9 days vacation from Sep.19 util 27. 9 days are pretty long for me even though I'm not any more a workaholic.
Yesterday Sep.20 Sunday, in Tokyo area we had a fine autumnal weather without no clouds in the pure blue sky. I went to a park named "Kinchakuda" meaning "purse" in Japanese for the shape of the park resembles Japanese tradional purse. This park is famous for blooming of many "Higanbana" (English name:cluster amaryllis or spider lily) in this season of "Higan" (autumnal equinoctial week, as you might know). Many many visitors visited here and enjoyed viewing flowers which covered all over the park like a big carpet.
From tomorrow till Sep.24 I will go to Aizu to attend Aizu festival.
Have a nice new week !
