Are we forgetting about Neil Turbin in Anthrax? ;) haha There are some good songs with Jon Bush-era Anthrax - and not just good songs, there are good thrash songs too - look at Deathrider!
Also, I realised I made a cock up in my essay... It's Desert Plains that Ripper slays on on Live in London. They don't even play Heading out to the Highway on LIL, hahaha.
Oct 21 2008 2:17 PM
It happened with Jon Bush with Anthrax, it happened with Blaze in Maiden, it happened with Ripper in Priest and Iced Earth, it happened with John Corabi with Motley Crue, it happened with Tony Martin with Sabbath TWICE and then almost happened with Dio in Sabbath, except Halford sang instead of Ozzy!
I'll admit... I listened to Crucible of Man once and just decided to be kind and say it was average as I assumed it'd at least grow on me. I guess not, then! haha
Are you looking forward to hearing Framing Armageddon with Barlow on vocals then?

The end again:
"On a personal level, I’d also like to argue that Ripper didn’t ‘ruin’ Iced Earth – it was because Ripper was in the band that I’m now a fan of Iced Earth. Also – I feel that The Crucible of Man is distinctly average. Ripper’s two albums with Iced Earth, especially Glorious Burden were better than the latest.
At least they have a lot of strong older material to play to keep them one of the better live bands around today. ;)
Sorry for the essay! But I’ve been debating Metal a lot lately, so I’ve got a lot to say! Well, even more than usual! haha"

The only thing that I have against the Ripper-era Priest albums is that they're a bit too 'American-sounding'. They've not got the classic Priest sound, and not just in production. There's a lack of the heroic melodies that we come to expect from Priest – but, not a great lot of bands were keeping that up in the 90s.
Priest have been known for adapting their sound to go with the big movement in Metal – short, sharper songs came in on British Steel and Point of Entry at the height of NWOBHM, when Maiden exploded with Bruce, Screaming for Vengeance was within the same vein. When Hair Metal became huge, they experimented with Turbo, when Thrash had gotten big, they released Painkiller. Then, after Rob left, the so-called NWOAHM was the big thing with bands like Pantera and Machine Head – and that's the most comparable thing that the Ripper-era Priest sounds like.
If you listen to or watch any of the live DVDs they recorded with Ripper in the band, you'll see the justice he gave to Halford-era songs. Yeah, he wasn't as good on Victim of Changes, but for my money he added new life to Heading for the Highway on Live in London.
And lets not forget, if we're playing the accusation game here: The two Ripper-era Priest albums absolutely shit on Halford's 2wo project.
If you feel that Ripper lacks soul in his vocals – remember, he’s only singing what he’s been given in your two favourite bands. And if you can say that his voice is soulless and that you don’t feel anything when you listen to Cathedral Spires and High Water Mark, particularly the end of High Water Mark... Then I just can’t understand where you’re coming from, to be perfectly honest. :P
On a personal level, I’d also like to argue that Ripper didn’t ‘ruin’ Iced Earth – it was because Ripper was in the

I've not heard a huge amount of Yngwie's stuff to compare it to, but from what a mate of mine says, a lot of his more recent stuff hasn't been too good. For me it's up there along with Joe Lynn Turner's albums.
I seriously don't know why you don't like Ripper's voice. It's just a great Metal voice that can fit into so many different styles and bands.

All I know is that Simon Wright's playing drums, and that suggests it won't be as heavy as Beyond Fear... yet one of the guitars I've seen used to record it is the same sort of guitar that Jeff Loomis plays... So maybe heavy but with a fairly steady beat... Either way, it WILL kick arse. ;)
You heard the new Yngwie album?
