Born on August 4, 1976, Kym Johnson was born in Sydney, Australia and is probably best known for her appearances in the Australian and American versions of the dancing reality show, "Dancing With The Stars." Kym began dancing at the age of 3 and began her ballroom dancing career at age 13. At that age, she appeared in an indie film, "Strictly Ballroom," directed by Baz Luhmann based in Australia. Kym became interested in serious dancing at 12 when she was dragged along by her brother to dance lessons, who wanted to take up dancing to meet girls. Since then, Kym learned how to tap dance and learned to dance jazz as well. In 1998, Kym and her partner Lithuanian Tomas Atkocevicius placed second at the Australian Dancespot Championships and they were finalists at the U.K. Ballroom Championships at Blackpool before Kym retired from ballroom dancing in 2001.
Before she appeared on Australia's version of "Dancing With The Stars," her works included a performance at Elton John's 50th birthday party, dancing at the "Blade Runner" launch party and touring with "Burn The Floor," a ballroom dance production.
After coming out of "ballroom retirement," Kym appeared for three seasons on Australia's "Dancing With The Stars" between 2004 and 2005 and won a title in season 2 with actor Tom Williams (whom she was dating at the time). When she got her title, she posed in an Australian's swimsuit magazine, "FHM Magazine" in 2006 before she came to America to do the American version of "Dancing With The Stars."
Kym moved to America when she signed to do "Dancing With The Stars" in America after her break-up with Tom Williams (she was engaged to an Australian named Shane Watson for two years before she was involved with Tom Williams). Her first partner in America during the show's third season was Talk Show Host Jerry Springer. They suceed to get through half the competition before they were eliminated. Their most memorable dance was the Waltz, which is the dance Jerry learned for his daughter, Katie's wedding.
Kym returned the following season with N'Sync star, Joey Fatone. Joey and Kym placed second on the competiton, marking Kym's first time to come so close to getting another trophy but in America. They were defeated by Olympics speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and his partner, Julianne Hough. Joey and Kym later toured with the rest of the cast of "Dancing With The Stars" across America that summer.
On the show's 5th season, Kym partnered with billionaire and owner of the NBA Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban. They were eliminated during the show's 5th week.
For the sixth season of the show, Kym was partners with Magician Penn Jillette of "Penn and Teller." Unfortunately, Kym did not stay on the show very long as they were eliminated the first week.
Determined to get her trophy, Kym returned the following season for the 5th time when she was partners with NFL player and Superbowl Champion Warren Sapp. Warren was known for Kym's "twinkle-toed Teddy Bear"! That season, Kym and Warren stayed in the competition for a long time until they reached the finals. After third place finalists Joey Fatone's bandmate, Lance Bass and his partner Lacey Schwimmer were eliminated, Warren and Kym were up against one couple to get the trophy. However, Kym became the only pro dancer on the show to place second twice when she and Warren were defeated by Supermodel Brooke Burke and her partner, Derek Hough, Julianne's older brother. Derek and Kym soon went on another tour with the show's cast from season 6 and 7 across America. Warren did not go on tour but he visited the cast in Orlando, Florida one night and joined them onstage for a song. As of recently in Spring 2009, Kym came back on the show with actor/comedian David Alan Grier but they were eliminated on the 5th week.
In season 9 of American DWTS, Kym paired with Showbiz Legend, Donny Osmond, who is also a brother of Marie Osmond who appeared on the third season of DWTS. After being in the finals twice before, Kym reached the finals again and was finally crowned champion with Donny Osmond of DWTS! Kym is a two-time International DWTS champion and is the only professional dancer in the world to win a title of the show in two different countries!
