Manuela Barile is an italian vocal researcher and interdisciplinary performer.
Her artistic research is based on a project-oriented work that combines vocal sounds with different media (performance, fields recording, video, photography, installations, improvisation, concert-performance, writing, drawings).
The connection between public and private has been one of the constant interrogations in her work, as well as the link between personal remembrances and collective memory.
The sense of places, especially the abandoned ones, the ruins, the home and death in life are some of the themes that she has explored in her artistic projects. She conceives her art as a continue investigation on the reality where the artist has to raise questions and doubts in order to capture the hidden subtleties of life and our present condition.
Until now she performed and collaborated with Mario Volpe, Gianni Lenoci, Marcello Magliocchi, Amy Denio, Phil Minton, Tristan Honsinger, Antonio Mainenti, Rinus Van Alebeek, Rui Costa, Paulo Raposo, Antez, Ernesto Rodrigues, Nilo Gallego, Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, Madame Cell, Maile Colbert, Pali Mersault, Cédric Anglaret, Noid, etc.
Her vocal compositions are included in various film, documentaries, video art projects (Annamaria Ippolito, Patricia Leal, Xaquin Rosales, etc.) and dance choreography (Paula Pinto).
In 2006 she participated to “Una Notte di Arte Totale "inaugura" Fresco Bosco” with Pino Pipoli. the event opened the "Fresco Bosco" exposition curated by Achille Bonito Oliva Certosa di San Lorenzo park in Padula (Salerno, Italy).
In 2007, she started a collaboration with the portuguese sound artist Rui Costa, through a large scale intermedia project entitled ‘La Scatola’, which was conceived as a series of installations and/or performances. The Portuguese Ministry of Culture funded this project.
She is the artistic director of Binaural, a Portuguese cultural organization dedicated to the promotion of sound and media arts, in particular its articulation with local contexts. Binaural runs an artistic residency space in Nodar, a small village in the north of Portugal. For further information: www.binauralmedia.org
She teaches a workshop called “The amplified expression of the body”, where body, voice, performance art, physical-acoustic space and sensors cross together, amplifying their expressive possibilities. This workshop has been conceived with Rui Costa.
Actually she's working in "Locus in quo", a multidisciplinary project about the sense of places.
