In 1997, acclaimed singer-songwriter and musician Mickey Carroll wrote an original musical entitled Mother J, based on his overall concern for the issues facing young people, families and community. The musical addresses the issues of cultural diversity, substance abuse and community fear management. He drew upon his vast knowledge and expertise in Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Hip-Hop and Rock & Roll to create a musical that would appeal to families.
Mickey approached his family, friends and community leaders in the City of Mount Dora, Florida and proposed to unite the community through an Experience to include Mother J the Musical and Art Exhibition. The production would require the participation of the community to be successful. The Musical and Art Exhibition were successful. The exhibition featured over 100 works of art; the Musical sold out all performance and raised over $2,000 in scholarships.
In 2000, Mickey met up with Michael Hurwitz an entrepreneur, inventor and producer and the two men, along with their wives commitment, decided to take Mother J to the next level.Due to the projects previous success, they incorporated as a 501C3 not-for-profit company to bring the production to other communities.
Its success was recognized by The National Parks & Recreation and was awarded the prestigious Dorothy Mullen National Arts & Humanities Award for the State of Florida for 2001.The Production was then brought to Winter Park, Florida in April 2001 where it continued to sell out its performances, raised consciousness over cultural diversity, and showcased the communitys performing, visual and creative talent. The production returned to Mount Dora in October 2001. The performances sold out with over 2,000 in attendance, highlighted over 160 works of art and raised $4,500 in scholarship funds.
