Nano Reyes isNANO. NANO is the new sound of out, proud, gay youth taking back the music they grew up loving and ridding it of it’s homophobic elements. Nano is not new to “the game”…he has been involved with the music industry and rap music before. Surprisingly, his first raps were part of the Christian rap scene known as “Holy Hip Hop”. He rapped under the name of L.I.L.’ A.N.T. which was an acronym for Life is Livin’ Anointed and True. He had been drawn into this music after a tumultuous time in his life in which he ended up in a Christian recovery home and on his way to Ministerial degree. Victory Outreach San Jose put out a compilation called Cease Fire which featured a track called “Jimmy’s Choice” that Nano spit a lot of the rhymes for. His burgeoning sexuality and the religious group he was involved with didn’t mix, and eventually “holy hip hop” and Nano Reyes parted ways. Still with a love for music, Nano landed a gig at a local radio station (102.5 KDON) and was a co-host to Mari-Jane while they hosted a show called Night Moves which aired Monday thru Thursday 10p.m.-2a.m. and he went by the name of Nano Reyes, The LOVE EXPERT. Still, Nano’s passion was rapping. In 2007, when out gay rapper Deadlee made national news announcing the HomoRevolution Tour, of Gay, Lesbian, and Transgendered hip hop artists standing up to the status quo and launching an regional tour, Nano was motivated. He contacted Milo Management, who assured him that there was room in the world for another gay rapper. And with Nano’s unique background and previous experience in Christian rap, he would have a cutting edge in the scene. With the character he has built through his experiences, Nano Reyes is not “just another gay rapper”; Nano Reyes is NANO.
