7.25.09 :: Lázaro Valiente live @ Fontana’s
Mauricio Pastrana (AKA Lázaro Valiente) started as a drummer at the age of 10.
He developed this technique using Rock n Roll as a medium playing qith
several bands.
After studying-strange but true- Business Administration, he decided
to do sound, art and music with anything or everything at reach.
He created his band out of electronic home devices, a hair dryer,
toys, water, xylophone, guitars, and about 20 other elements that he
orchestrates on his own, live.
Gives concerts with 4 Mexican police cars, does public interventions
using the sounds of the streets and has played Coachella,
Lollapalooza, ACL and SXSW next to great bands such as Cold War Kids
and Devendra Banhart.
His first album recorded in Brazil will be out soon where he mixes his
folk/pop/rock songs with Brazil..s everyday sound and has special
guests aboard. (produced and recorded by: Lázaro himself)
Lázaro Valiente will be doing a residency in New York this summer
sharing all of this with any one interested.
WHAT DOES THE NAME NACOTHEQUE MEAN?
[NAKO-TEK] Nacotheque - The name Nacotheque was made up of the words “Naco” (often used in Mexican Spanish to describe bad-mannered people. Kinda equivalent to the American “White Trash”) and “Discotheque”. The name has a meaning all in it’s own - representing music not only from Mexico, but Spanish-sung music from around the globe and sharing it with an eclectic selection of music fans.
THE NACOTHEQUE MISSION ::
There are tons of new, old, rare, and yet to be discovered artists that beat the stereotypes of Spanish-sung music. The more people that know about it the better the public can be educated in what is considered the alternative to Latin music.
WHAT IS NACOTHEQUE? A PARTY, A BRAND, A TASTEMAKER.
Nacotheque is a dance party in NYC that highlights new and old, popular and obscure music from all over Latin America and Spain of rock n’ roll, new wave, indie rock, baile-funk, nouveau-eighties, electropop, disco, cumbia, punk, and some hip-hop. The party happens every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at Fontana’s in the Lower East Side/Chinatown area.
Nominiated by PAPER magazine “Best New Party of 2007” and dubbed as “NYC’s hottest indie rock party en español” by URB magazine, Nacotheque has become one of the most unique events in New York City’s underground scene. Nothing says “awesome” when realizing that we’ve created an outlet for Latinos and Non-Latinos (who speak Spanish or not at all) to come together and enjoy and discover new music in a diverse and fun environment.
In addition to being a party, Nacotheque has become a recognized brand to Spanish-sung Latin alternative music that allows us the privilege to introduce new artists to a generation of music and pop culture hungry people all over the world.
WHO ARE THE PRODUCERS BEHIND NACOTHEQUE?
Since February of 2006 Juan Ramirez (Marcelo Cunning) and Amylu Meneses (Amylulita) have been producing Nacotheque. By blending their own event production backgrounds and musical tastes Marcelo and Amylu take on the responsibility to seek out music and share it with Nacotheque fans.
In addition to sharing the music in a party setting, the Nacotheque producers recently spoke at NYU on the culture and scene that has been developed for young Latinos and Non-Latinos. It’s exciting when we get emails and comments from people saying how they never thought Spanish-sung music was actually cool, but now they have discovered a whole new world of indie music!

Elijah Wood, Scarlett Johansson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wendy James, Kinky, Chetes, Los Amigos Invisibles, Zoe, Circo, Silverio, Calle 13, Mima, Volumen Cero, Dapunto Beat, DJ Buenavista (Sinnamon Records/Razzmatazz), and DJ Perotútehasvisto (Razzmatazz/Dancing Queen Festival).
