Toffee was brought in as a stray on 12/30/08. She was picked up on Maggie Leonard ln, in Beaufort. She was wearing a red collar. Toffee is a real sweetheart. being she was a stray we cannot tell you any home behaviors or past vet history. we will update if we discover any new behaviors! Toffee is looking for a new loving home! Update 1/24/09 Toffee Is Pregnant!!!! just now showing! She will NOT be up for adoption until puppies are Born and weened! Update 3-8-09 Toffee had 10 puppies on 2-9-09. All the puppies were healthy and toffee was a very attentive and amazing mom. the pups stayed with toffee for about six weeks and then were put up for adoption. There is one puppy left that has not been adopted. However nursing 10 puppies took a toll on poor toffee. She was really under weight. We keep her in isolation until she gained some weight. With some time ans lots and lots of puppy food toffee is back to her normal loving self. Toffee is Finally up for adoption!! Hurray!! Toffee is such a trooper, she has been at the shelter for about 3 months and she hasn't let it get her down. She is just as sweet and lively as the first day we met her. Toffee needs to finally have a nice, cozy house were she can relax and feel safe with people who love her!
Kaicy was brought to us a stray on 3/12/09. She was found on Fisher St in Morehead City, wearing a blue collar. Kaicy is a wounderful girl, she loves to walk and play and just be outside. however Kaicy is probably about 5 years old so she is much more mellow and calm than th dogs around her. Thats a good thing and a bad thing, sometimes its good because peopl want a calm dog, but for the most part they just over look you thinkin you don't wanna be bothered. Kaicy would make a woundeful family dog, she has the calm personality for the kids and can loungue around but she is still young enough to go out and play ball with her. She is quite, clean, well mannered, sweet and loyal, everything you would want in a dog but know one takes the time to find out. Believe me she wants your attention just as bad as that puppy beside her but she is too modest and trained to well to act like a fool to get it. I can tell Kaicy is startin to get down a little, so now is the perfect time for someone to scoop her up and brighten things up for her a little. She really is an all around good dog and does deserve to have a loving family.
Sheba was a stray found on Chatham street in Newport on 4-1-09. She was brought in by animal control with, what we can only assume, was one of her puppies. She does appear to have recently nursed puppies. So sheba is obviously not spayed. She is a black and tan rottweiler, lab mix, that is rather small in comparison to both of those breeds. After 72 hours her and the pup went up for adoption. Sheba is a very out going dog with an upbeat personality. She always seems happy to see any and everyone. If u just look at her in the kennel as your walking by, she seems fairly hyper and overly excited. All the dogs are hyper because they don't get to burn of all their excess energy everyday. Once Sheba gets some of that pent up excitement and energy out, she relaxes a lot. She becomes a really mellow, cuddly dog. She is perfectly content to stand beside you and get a good scratch. Sheba need a home where she can give a new family all the love and loyalty she has inside her!!
Maggie is a very special girl. She was brought to us on 3-4-09 and she was VERY pregnant. She had her puppies at the shelter less than a week later. Maggie was an extremely attentive and nervous mother. Her constant nervousness and feeling like she always had to be alert, never relaxing, just watching over her puppies, caused a tragedy. We can only speculate, but we think this behavior turned her milk bad, made it acidic, Due to this we lost all of Maggie's puppies :( Maggie's was obviously depressed for a little while! However Maggie is such a sweet, gentle natured dog that with a little extra attention she bounced back rather fast. She is an all around amazing girl. She would make a great family dog, a single person's dog, a couples dog, her personality makes her options endless. I think she will be great in almost any situation. As much as we love Maggie, she needs to find a place she can call home for ever! She has been at the shelter too long and needs to find someone she can give all that positive energy to.
Leyroy was a stray found on Norfolk in Bogue pines of Newport. He was brought in by animal control on 3-26-09. Leyroy is a fairly large fawn colored boxer mix. He has a big goof head and floppy ears that make you just want squeeze him and kiss him. He as been nothing but well behaved and affectionate since he arrived at the shelter. He has obviously had some training because he listens fairly well and walks well on a leash( once he has had a chance to let out some of that pent up energy from being in the kennel) and responds to your commands when he isn't distracted by all the interesting new sights and smells. He never gives us any problems when it comes to getting him in and out of the kennel and I haven't seen him argue with his neighboring kennel mates at all. He actually just ignored the dog next to him when the other dog started trying to fence fight. Leyroy's owner did call about him and thats how we know his real name. We agreed to hold leyroy till 5:00 pm that day they could come get him but we never heard back from anyone. so Leyroy went back up for adoption.Leyroy is the type of dog you can roll around with in the grass and plat fetch all day. His size gets your attention but his personality gets you hooked. You can't help but to fall in love with him, he is like a big playful teddy bear. Leyroy needs a home where he can run and play a lot, he needs a home with fairly active owners. i don't think he would do well penned up or left alone for long periods of time. He needs interaction and exercise. If you are interested in having a fun loving, playful companion that is fairly large and a bit clumsy, Leyroy is your boy. leyroy is still young but we cant say for sure exactly how old he is, i would guess he is between 1 and 2 years old.
Dollie is an owner turn in brought to us on 3-18-09. She is a beautiful yellow lab mix. Dollie was previously adopted from us, so this is he second trip to "doggy jail" or at least I'm sure thats how she feels. She was returned to us because she was not completely house broken and doesn't like to be left alone often. From my prior experience with Dollie being at the shelter, she was always clean on the inside of her kennel run. So she obviously knows she shouldn't potty where she eats and sleeps. She has the basic comprehension of the whole house breaking concept so with a little time and effort I'm sure she would pick it up in no time, as long as you are consistent with the training. It seems to me that her "accidents" the house where due to the fact that she was upset about being home alone. Dollie is about a year old and has already been spayed, which makes her adoption price only $35.00. She is also up to date on all her shots. we were told she does well with other dogs but hasn't had much if any interaction with cats or children. She has a pretty mellow disposition. She is not the type of dog to jump all over you or pull you down when you take her for a walk. She is a smart, gentle and extremely affectionate dog. Dollie needs a home where she will be given the opportunity to learn and grow. She would do best in an environment where she wasn't left alone much and when she is it would benefit you and her if she was crated or left outside in a fenced in area. Dollie is a great dog and she needs a owner who wont give up on her very easily, she needs stability to allow her to feel safe and loved. She has been let down by people almost her whole life, i think it's time she learns how to just be a happy dog.
Jackie is a tan and white pitbull who was brought to us as a stray. She was found at Taylor Farm Rd in Beaufort, the person who found her , kept her for a few days and named her Jackie. Jackie is super friendly, she greets everyone with a big smile and what looks like a little dance, she kinda prances around and bounces a little and her whole body wiggles when she wages her tail. Every inch of Jackie lets you know she is happy to see you. she doesn't jump all over or bounce around the cage, she just wait for you to pet her. She has very good manners, she doesn't pull when shes on a leash, doesn't get easily distracted and is GREAT with other dogs. She is just an all around happy dog. She has the perfect disposition and personality. She is so well behaved that you could take her almost anywhere. She is calm and attentive when she needs to be but she also know and loves play time. Jakie radiates happiness, cause just watching her you can't help but to smile. She has a unique ability to make everything seem OK, Jackie needs a permanent home where she can spread her happiness and be part of a family. Jackie spends most of her life making people smile, now she deserves to finally be just a regular beloved family pet.. If you are interested in Jackie you must go to the shelter and get an application for pitbull adoptions. Then you have to bring back ALL of the required paperwork and speak with the manager. The manager is the only person who can authorizer pitbull adoptions. It may be a little bit of an inconvenience but we love our pitbulls and have to make sure they end up in safe places with responsible owners. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call the shelter at 252-247-7744 and speak with the manager, her name is Candace!
On 4-8-09 two very cute yellow lab puppies where picked up on old church road, on highway 58 and brought to the shelter. They are both females and are a little timid. They are much more open when they are around each other . They haven't had enough exposure to people to be completely comfortable, but we are working with them. They also haven't quite learned the whole purpose of a leash they just don't like it very much. Both girls seem more willing to learn and try new things when they are together or around other dogs. They are both very pretty and sweet puppies and I'm sure with a little time and effort they will both be great family dogs. They are still young enough to unlearn their bad habits and pick up on the good ones. In my opinion they will do much better in a home where they are not they only pet. They deserve a good home where they can learn the joys of being part of a family and being loved.
Alice was a stray brought to us on 4-20-09 and she was found on North River Bridge in Beaufort. Since Alice was a stray we don't know anything about her medical history or previous background but is a great girl. Alice has been extremely friendly since the day she came in. She does have a lot of energy but all labs do. She seems to listen pretty well, she knows some basic commands like sit and stay. I can't say that she is housebroken because i don't know but she is very clean on the inside of her kennel run. Alice has the cutest curly tail, it almost looks like a question mark. She has a very sweet, affectionate and playful personality. Alice would make a great family dog and she deserves a good home. We haven't actually put her in our exercise pen with other dogs but she doesn't show any aggression towards them as she walks by them or they walk by her, she is so friendly I'm sure she would do fine with just about anyone.
Virgil was a stray brought to us on 4-9-09 from Merrimon Road in South River. When Virgil first arrived he had a whole in his neck that was pretty infected from a collar that was embedded. He was a great sport despite the obvious pain he was in, he never growled, he never snapped and he never even tried to run away from us as we doctored the wound. The whole is almost completely healed now and Virgil is up for adoption. He is a very energetic boy, he loves to run and play but he is also affectionate and submissive to your commands. He does well on a leash and gets along with every dog we introduce him to. Virgil's wounds and obvious neglect by his previous owner never dampened his spirit, he is still just as happy and content as a dog can be at a shelter. Virgil has a great spirit and a wonderful outlook on life and deserves a family who loves him. He will obviously need some training and time but he deserves at least that much due to what he has been through, he deserves to feel safe and loved for once in his life.
Lugnut was an owner turn in om 4-22-09 because his previous owner left him with his roommate and never returned, roommate couldn't afford to care for him anymore. He is a Chesapeake bay retriever and boxer mix who is about 9 months old. Lugnut is a very spunky little fellow, he loves to play and can never get enough attention. The roommate told us that he is extremely good with children, he is extremely gently and affectionate. Even with really young children, he will go up to them and play but be sure not to knock them down, he is protective of then and very observant and cautious around them. He is just a very sweet boy. He has a great spirit, hes always happy to see everyone and just loves get your attention. He does pretty good on a leash and is good with other dogs, but he was kept outside in a pen so he is not house broken that we are aware of. He will make a super family dog and deserves to find an owner he can rely on forever.

most everyone around here is stupid! get this. this guy brought in a litter of puppies and this lady took one from him in the parking lot.. ( the puppies were onlky 4 weeks old) she asked a bunch of stupid questions then came back the next day and turned the puppy into us because he cryed all night!! DURRR
Puppies attract stupid people because all the stupid people see is a cute fuzzy face, and they don't stop to think that that cute fuzzy face is going to grow up and eat a lot and need a lot of attention and training and work. -sighs- I've been running into the same problem over here. It's sad.
