Paul Swing
1958 born in Vienna (Austria), private studies with Franz Koglmann in Vienna and Jean-Francois Canape in Paris.
Workshops with Gil Evans, George Russell, Bill Dixon and Michael Mantler. Professional free-lance musician and composer since 1986.
After touring and recording with world music groups such as SALAMAT and ABRASAZ (performing at festivals in Huesca/Spain, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Paris) and jazz groups like TAKABANDA (performing at festivals in Rome and Paris), he become increasingly interested in the combination of electronic and acoustic music. Since five years he works with his partner Zam Johnson in the group TAPBOO with which he played at the Freiberg Festival 2006. In Paris he works with the group MAZALA, also an electronic-acoustic project, which started public performances in March 2006.
Theatre activities include composition, performance and acting with ZATA theatre ("Aporee", "Terminator Demokrator", "Rausland" in cooperation with Willi Thomczyk from Theater Kohlenpott, participating at the International Festival of the Theatre, Tashkent, Usbekistan), the concert spectacle "König Kacke", "Black Rider" at Landestheater Mecklenburg (Neustrelitz), and finally a performance with Blixa Bargeld from "Einstürzende Neubauten".
In his own band AFRICAN CHASE EXPERIENCE he combines African singing and drumming with avantgarde jazz and rock. This band, which exists since 9 years and is made up of 9 high-class musicians, has played at major festivals in Leipzig, Hannover, Rostock, Chemnitz, Cottbus, Glauchau and Berlin. In 2004 he also performed at the Festival Jazzy Colours in Paris with renowned bass player Jean-Jacques Avenel, and the African musicians Moriba Koita and Ibrahima Sumanu.
Paul Swing has made several live radio recordings in Berlin (SFB, Radio Brandenburg), Hamburg (NDR 4), Paris (Radio France) and Austria (Ö 1).
He also won the following awards: Austrian Young Composers Award, Berlin Studio Award, Berlin Jazz Composition Award.
