Introspective lyrics combined with extroverted, slap yo’ mama beats. “It’s the time to do what I love and not do what’s expected of me,” the Applebird Music Foundation artist explains. Growing up in the overlooked Inland Empire fuels the young MC’s quest to be heard. Instead of metropolitan buildings, the unlikely rapper from an unlikely background finds optimism and lyrical content amidst desert foothills.
Evolving from fan to Pheo in High School. The free spirited artist’s name stands for balance through the hybridization of the word, “feo,” meaning ugly in Spanish, with the word, “pretty,” in English. Pheo gained the courage to step up to confident, lunch table lyricists within those same halls, and stumbled across his path. “Back then I was trying to find my own sound and was young with a lot to say,” he explains, “now I have even more to say and can articulate it.”
After a stint at Norfolk State and brief residency in Arizona, Pheo returned to Southern California, and joined label mate forces with Speak! under the indie label, Applebird Music Foundation. Proving that real niggas do real things, Applebird’s dynamic producers, Afta-1 and Alf Alpha’s extravagent instrumentals personify Pheo’s earnestness, ultimately sticking all the butter in the world in a big ass microwave.
Blossoming as an artist in spite of hardship, the MC’s latest mixtape, Word to Your Blogger has garnered plenty of attention on blog sites and in the Southern California underground scene. Pheo made the right choice, not only for his own career, but also for Hip Hop fans across the nation, and soon, the world. “I’m on the cusp of becoming more than I ever thought I could.” Pheo knows his time is now.
“I just want to be timeless.” This artist’s wish will come true soon. A role model for his younger siblings and an inspiration to people all over the Inland Empire, Pheo is a name you may be unfamiliar with now, but will surely be chanting out loud soon enough.
