Born in Tokyo, MAI TOMINAGA started her filmmaking career while a film student at Tama Art University. While in school, she wrote and directed three short films, including SCORCHED, which played at the 1993 Pia Film Festival, the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival. Upon graduation, she joined Pyramid Film Co. Ltd. and directed a number of TV commercials. She also wrote and directed the highly acclaimed animation/CG short films BUSTAMAN OF BUONOMO (screened at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2000) and SLOTH SYRUP (screened at the Hiroshima International Animated Film Festival, Tenerife International Animation Festival and CINANIMA2002 in Spain).
