New Music: Jens Lekman: "Sipping on the Sweet Nectar (Bogdan Irkük's Love Nectar Mix)"
Only the conga drums on last year's fantastic Night Falls Over Kortedala really let on that Gothenburg, Sweden's Jens Lekman shares a hometown with slo-mo cosmic disconauts Studio. Kortedala video selection "Sipping on the Sweet Nectar" was the most disco-oriented track on Lekman's album, though it tended more toward the lush orchestration of the 1970s Philadelphia sound than the minimalist grooves of, say, Manuel Göttsching's E2-E4. And then there was the matter of Lekman's sentimental indie-pop croon. Bulgaria-based producer Bogdan Irkük brings the Smalltalker and the Studio style closer together on this Italo-spacy "Love Nectar Mix", one of two "Nectar" remixes released last month by Swedish label Rollerboys. A rudimentary bass line settles in beneath wobbling synths, dreamy Göttsching-esque guitars, and the slightest touches of the original's strings, driven along by a beat with that crashing, loved/hated 1980s snare sound. Lekman's vocal is plucked from its usual harmonic context, suddenly sounding as much like Phil Collins as Stephin Merritt. There's also a vocoder. J.L., phone home; yours truly, Forkcast.
