"Local students raise funds to help build a health clinic in Liberia"
Fairfield, CA– Solano Community College students are organizing a “Liberia Relief Incorporation Project” fundraising event on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the campus cafeteria.
The fund raiser is being held in order to raise $1,000 & create awareness about a new Women’s Health Clinic in Liberia. This clinic will further help prevent & diagnose women who have been victims of the ongoing war and epidemic of STDs.
Liberia, officially known as the Republic of Liberia, is a country colonized under the U.S. on July 26, 1987, the U.S. granted Liberia its independence so freed slaves could live peacefully. In 2002, Relief Inc., a non-profit organization was established to improve the lives of the people of Liberia. In collaboration with Relief Inc. Solano College students hope to make a difference in the lives of Liberians in need.
Speakers at this event who will present and educate are: Mrs. Phebe Dennis-Fortt, Founder and C.E.O. of Relief Inc. who is a survivor of civil war and other life facing circumstances. LaNae Jaimez, Ph.D., a professor at Solano College who received her B.S. at the University of Oklahoma and Ph.D. at the University of Texas, and Solano College students. In addition, a live dance and drum performance by the Tarlesson Family, a Liberian refugee family from Yolo County who survived four years of hiding from the civil war.
The “Liberia Relief Incorporation Project” is open to the public appetizers, desserts, and music. Entrance fee is $5.00 with donation or studentID/ $10.00 without donation or student ID.
