REBEL SOUL SOUNDSYSTEM was founded in 1985 by DJ Bruddah K from the SF Bay Area and DJ TCB from Washington, D.C. (Chocolate City). The name was inspired by Ras Robert Nesta Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Aswad. Spinning primarily at underground gigs, house parties, weddings, and benefit shows, as well as on the air as part of the KALX Radio THIRD WORLD Department, REBEL SOUL SOUNDSYSTEM was active throughout the late 1980's, retiring as a soundsystem when DJ TCB moved back to the East Coast. Bruddah K, aka DJ LAPU2, went on to become a Producer and DJ at KPFA in Berkeley, continuing to spin with other DJ formations up to the present day. After returning to school to get a degree in Ethnic Studies, DJ LAPU2 decided to re~activate the long dormant REBEL SOUL SOUNDSYSTEM with a kru of Sistrens & Bredrens from the new generations who love ROOTS REGGAE & SOUL.
