    Hero of the Month

    Summer 2008

Jocelyn is our July hero-of-the-month. She is from the bay area, California.

Jocelyn graduated from Cal State Hayward University with double majors in Health Science, minor in biology and Recreation and community services (Therapeutic Recreation option). She has both state and national certification since 1997. She is also active members in both the American Therapeutic Recreation Association and the Bay Area Therapeutic Recreation Association.

Jocelyn decided to become a recreational therapist because it was in the health field and she wanted to help people. It is personally rewarding and she likes to think outside the box and surprise people with “Outcomes.”

Jocelyn currently works at the V.A. Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center, which is one of four in the country. She is specializing in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) vets coming home from the war.

She is part of an exceptional Recreational Therapy service where the collection of skills and experiences in one hospital is unbelievable. Jocelyn’s focus is: adapted recreation skills, leisure skills training and education, community reintegration, stress management of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms combined with TBI, social interaction skills.

Jocelyn is our hero of the month because as a Filipino American she grew into the profession with a lack of support from her family. Twelve years ago there was this assumption that Filipino women would go into nursing or business. Jocelyn says she was someone who strayed to be unique. She started out as a Recreational Therapy Assistant and had worked her way up from being a one person department. Today, her family are in awe of what she does.

Jocelyn is the mother of two small boys, a wife, an active member of my church. She enjoys special event planning for friends and family. Her leisure consists of "quiet time" at home with the kids, surfing the internet, and "therapeutic cleaning".

    Spring 2008

Meet our June 2008 hero-of-the-month: Jessica. She is a graduate from Southern University A & M of Baton Rouge, Louisiana in Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Studies. Jessica has worked for the Veteran Affairs Administration for 5 years. Here she works in the mental health setting providing therapeutic activities to the veterans from all conflicts. Jessica has a vast experience having also worked with Geriatrics and Hospice care residents.

She decided to major in therapeutic recreation because the field is broad and there were many settings to work. Jessica is very motivated to learn more about the field of therapeutic recreation and the many opportunities.

She was chosen to be our hero-of-the-month because she is a kind-hearted person who loves her job. In her words, she says that she provides “Blue Ribbon service to the vets and many others.” She loves learning and enjoys finding new opportunities in recreational therapy that she can provide.

Jessica claims: “my job is very rewarding. I love it and hope to be one of the next big whigs someday.” I think she will be.

Jessica has three children who she loves. She is married to a wonderful man and she enjoys a variety of recreation activities including: traveling with her family, doing family activities, exercising, dancing, and listening to music.

    Dear friend,

    Photobucket

I cannot thank you enough for your kind support and friendship! Welcome to
our ever growing family of friends.
I'm really happy you have decided to
become friends of the Wake Up (to child abuse) MySpace Music page.
    Just by
adding us to your friends you have already demonstrated that you have a good
heart and are willing to take a step towards ending the hidden suffering of
    so many.

We also dare to hope you will be able to persuade some of your other MySpace
friends to join our just fight against child abuse by adding us to their
    friends too.
The larger our family of friends becomes, the more people we
will be able to reach and educate about this terrible ‘disease’ sweeping
across the world which blights the lives of more children than you may
    imagine.
Please take a moment to read some of the statistics on child abuse
highlighted on our profile and within our blogs.
I am sure you will be just
as shocked and appalled as we are when you find out the full extent of this
    scourge.

The innocent children suffering such terrible abuse need all the help they
    can get.
Increased awareness of this foul concealed crime will help to
prevent more children living through the agonising torment which I was
    forced to experience.

I hope you have a great day and look forward to hearing from you soon with
your views and comments on this important issue,

    Ralph

Thank you to those of you who have written me to ask for names of individuals you can contact. At the end of the short video linked here, you will find all of the contact information. This video is not about all of the statistics related to an academic program; rather, it is intended to provide information about the individuals who receive our services.

Recreational Therapists and Friends of Recreational Therapy:

Last week, the Provost at Florida International University announced that he intended to close the Recreation and Sport Management Program, in which the Recreational Therapy Program is a track. He stated that he wanted the faculty to graduate all of the students in one year. This announcement was made without warning and the faculty members were not given any chance to put forth an argument.

Clearly, hard decisions need to be made during difficult economic times; however, recreational therapy is too often considered unnecessary and easy to cut. This should trouble anyone who sees the value in preparing students to provide services to people with disabilities, illnesses or limitations. Too often those individuals who need and deserve our services are forgotten.

For those of you who work in the profession but live outside of Florida, you might be wondering how this affects you. Consider this--Florida International University is the last program in the state of Florida, a large state with a solid job market. As qualified recreational therapists grow scarce, jobs will close. As jobs close, the profession will struggle. What is to keep other institutions from following suit? This cycle could easily repeat itself in states throughout the country.

    You should be concerned!

If you are interested in contacting administrators at FIU and voicing your thoughts on the importance of keeping the program open, please feel free to write me back and I will be happy to provide you with the contact information.

    Thank you,
    Alexis McKenney

Happy Birthday Pictures, Images and Photos

    The purpose of recreation
    Is not to kill time,
    But to make time live;
    Not to keep people occupied,
    But to keep them refreshed;
    Not to offer an escape,
    But to provide
    A discovery of life.
