Solo it's just me playing my Martin guitar (or sometimes my '63 Gretsch jazzbox) and singing everything from old blues, folk, country, rockabilly & easy listning staples to more current hits by people like Counting Crows, Drive By Truckers, Ryan Adams, Diswalla etc, and my originals, of course... then there are my bands:
the Catillacs play a wide variety of vintage (mostly) American music, from '50s rockabilly to '60s rock & soul, to the blues of BB King and SRV... the Catillacs are a band that always satisfies... The mature people grew up on this stuff, and the kids love the retro vibe... win-win.
the King Juju band plays mostly blues & soul. they look suspiciously like the Catillacs...
King Juju Trio is an organ trio... that's organ, guitar & drums playing bluesy jazzy loungy retro music usually in cool lounges...
These groups all consist of:
Richie Bean: vocals, guitar
George Burton: Fender Bass (except the trio, bass is played on the organ)
Leon Holder: piano, organ (bass in trio) & vocals
Terry Smith: drums

"Crunchy bits of voodoo blues mixed with soft chewy morsels of alternative rock and
country" is a good description of my music. I've often been compared to both Neil Young
and John Fogerty.
I started playing in Reno in 1979 and have played all over the west coast for the
last 25 years. I've played everything from Zeppelin style rock to hard Chicago blues
to lounge lizard music. My favorites have always been blues, rockabilly and '60s rock
and country. Now I'm a rabid Outlaw Country fan, and my music is inching in that
direction. Being a musician has given me a lifetime of memories to draw on for inspiration.
Like the time in 1990 when a tall curly headed stranger asked to sit in on harmonica and
blew the room away, then told us he'd just won the world championship harmonica
blow-off and would soon have his own brand of harps. Turned out Lee Oskar wasn't lying.
Or getting to sit in with great Portland musicians like Kinzel & Hyde and Bill Rhodes, and
hanging out with the late great Paul DeLay and the Original Snakeboy. It's also been
incredibly cool opening for Walter Trout, Smokin' Joe Kubek, Little Charlie and the
Nightcats, etc. and meeting Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Junior Lockwood, Elvin Bishop
and a lot of other incredible musicians both famous and working class Joes like me.
25 years of gigging, Waterfront Blues Festival, 4-Clark Co Fairs, Sunbanks Blues Festival, Blues By The Sea,Taste of Tillamook, Ghirabaldi Crab Races, Kalama Blues Festival, International Blues Challenge Semi Finalist, and hundreds of gigs.
