About me:
Roanoke Arts Festival
November 2009

The arts are taking over Roanoke!

The city nestled in southwest Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains is hosting the annual Roanoke Arts Festival. The two-day extravaganza will feature lots of performing and visual arts appealing to a local audiences and visitors alike.

This November, the city will be transformed into the arts capital of Virginia with riveting performances, dazzling art – and a whole lot of fun.

On the heels of last year’s inaugural Roanoke Arts Festival, the second annual Roanoke Arts Festival, re-timed this year to help celebrate the opening of the new Taubman Museum of Art, will be held Nov. 8-9 with free and ticketed performances and visual arts that are sure to appeal to a wide range of regional audiences and visitors alike. With the Blue Ridge Mountains as a stunning backdrop, the Roanoke Arts Festival will feature more than a dozen events and exhibits at venues across the city. From an evening with Crystal Gayle to a free rock concert, bluegrass workshop, theater performances, culinary arts and puppets and classical music, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

For our second year of what will become an annual tradition, we are delighted to feature so much variety and quality in the performing and visual arts, with Roanoke’s spectacular setting, friendly people and year-round appreciation of the arts, we look forward to welcoming arts fans from throughout Virginia and the region. Now in its second year — and a third one being planned — Roanoke may one day be added to that illustrious list.

Red Velvet Curtain Cult presents:

VIRGIN BRIDE by Tom Estes

Benjamin Franklin House
36 Craven Street
London
WC2N 5NF

Following on from their sell out shows at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, The Red Velvet Curtain Cult shall inhabit and haunt the Benjamin Franklin House with site specific art, performance, film, oddities and happenings from 13 artists. Set in a Georgian house where layers of history unravel from behind panelled walls and deep-set fireplaces whisper ashes of deeds past, the artists will engage with and draw inspiration from the history of the space, including its most famous inhabitant Benjamin Franklin, he of keys and kites….

Expect spinning tops, glass armonicas, trepanning games, story telling, ceremonial mythologies, muffled whisperings, cyclical wanderings, all serenaded by the sound of a haunting electric cello…

Curated by Lili Spain and Sarah Grainger-Jones
