I listen to anything GOOD that has meaning and substance with some heart and soul mixed in. Being that I'm 24 and From NY, NY is a huge influence on me along with some of the weird, sometimes very creative thoughts that pop up in my head. I draw influence from "the beauty of life", to put it simply.
When it comes to Utica Hip Hop, one name always seems to stand out. That name is Suezar (pronounced Sway-ZAR). He’s been writing rhymes for 10 years, but only started recording songs in March 2008. 24 year old Suezar definitely has what it takes to hold his own amongst any MC. There has been a huge surge of new musicians/rappers over the past few years, but what Suezar has that most don’t is that he puts his heart & soul into EVERY song he creates. Whether it’s reflecting on his life, uplifting the neighborhood he comes from (CornHill), touching on a wide array of subjects including foster care or making a heartfelt ode to his son, Suezar is definitely one of a kind.
In a short period of time, he’s been able to have his music globally recognized on Hip Hop blog sites, local as well as global mixtapes, even almost able to have his music played for one of Hip Hop’s major figures. “What happened was I sent the first song I made this year, “I’m So Fresh”, to a friend of mine from Virginia. He just so happened to be in NYC at Jay-Z’s 40/40 club that same weekend. He let someone listen to my song on his iPhone, and the guy wanted to have the DJ play it. Needless to say, my friend didn’t trust the guy, so he didn’t give him his phone. I wouldn’t have either in that situation, but I definitely appreciated the gesture.”
When asked, “What do you feel is missing from Hip Hop?” he responded, “To be as modest as I can... Me. I feel I have a lot to bring to the table. I have a great ear for music, the rhymes I write are very good, and a lot of people seem to complement me on my flow, or the way I say my rhymes over the beat. I feel that certain artists are more about quantity over quality. I don’t have time to waste. I can do 5 songs in about 2 hours, but the difference is my songs have substance, and good music, no matter where it comes from, cannot be denied.”
