My name is Sully (Michael J. Sullivan) and I am a Songwriter/Performer/Chicago Firefighter. I surrendered to The Lord in August 2003 when I realized I wasn't serving The Lord with the life I was living and the music I was writing and performing. For years I had been playing Rock Music and chasing a dream that I thought was going to give me satisfaction in my life. After attending a few Gospel Music (GMA) events and meeting other Christian Songwriters I realized that the music genre was not as important as the message within the song. Worldly themes and styles come and go but the Lord's message is timeless, it never changes. It always has been and always will be the same. (Just watch a Billy Graham Classic and you'll see dated hair styles and clothing, but the message is still as pertinent in those days as it is today). I have gone back to my roots and am now writing and performing acoustically. I still love Rock Song writing and hope to return to it someday with a full band.
My greatest desire is to write, record and perform about how God has changed my life so that it may help not only me, but others to understand the great Love of Jesus! It is very hard for people to understand and see past the religious categories that mankind has established in order to know God. The term "Born Again" really confuses, frightens and even makes people run the other way. I know because that is exactly what I did. That description actually paralyzed me from hearing the truth. The name "Jesus" also makes people run the other way.
Why do people immediately want to critisize and persecute a confessed Born again Christian? It would be easier to speak to a person who never even heard of Jesus. At least that person would have an open mind. I'm afraid that it might be due to our own inability to spread the Love, Peace and Joy as God had intended. Are we walking in Love or Judgement? Are we living the life or just speaking about it? Does God's Love really flow through us unconditionally or are we selective? Mankind judges people by their looks, skills and possesions. God will judge us by our Faith, Love and Obedience. To understand the difference between God's Will and the Sinful Nature of Man is to live or die forever!
I have been an independent songwriter for many years but only until very recently, have I been enlightened as to how our Heavenly Father can use me!
