Listening to The Rips is often like a look back on a dirty weekend, detailing issues of lust for the opposite sex or observations of their generations desires & appetite for personal destruction. Other times songs are more like personal renditions of the frustrations of the modern British working class 20 something but in the style of Americana cool. Live the band is a true spectacle, with erratic behaviour from a non-conforming front man with the rest of the band full of drive and energy. Their performances have an honesty and power about them that make those of their contemporaries look pale in comparison. The approach to the music is far closer to the raw, hard driving rock and roll of years gone by when music was real than the majority of the bands currently riding the band wagon. Guitars are fast and loud without crossing into the ‘Punk’ or ‘Metal’ territories, but these tunes also contain real hooks and catchy melodies, which is where this band really stands out, and it’s probably the bands refusal to compromise their music to match the 'current sound' that has gained them their legions of loyal fans. Live or on record, either way, this band deliver.
The Rips were formed in earlier part of 2003, Cole (vox), Dan (drums), Tel (guitars) & Matt (bass) grew up together in the prime of the Indie/Alternative invasion of the UK music charts. This introduced these four lads from Romford to their first guitar based influences (Nirvana, Oasis, Radiohead, Smiths), but their influences span right across the rock n roll spectrum and go right back to the sixties (Beatles, Dylan, Hendrix) to the no fuss bands from the great Punk movement (Stooges, Ramones) right up to the rock revival of recent years (Strokes, White Stripes, Libertines, QOSA).
Earlier in the year The Rips supported media favourite Pete Doherty on a rare sold-out acoustic show then later in the summer supported the legendary Inspiral Carpets at a sold-out Shepherds Bush Empire. More recently, their tracks have been featured on 2 unsigned bands CD’s for Trash Society Records, these can been found in music venues up and down the country as well as being featured on copies of Artrocker Magazine, while another Rips track featured on a compilation CD for Notion Magazine.
The Rips can be caught live in venues in and around London right up to the end of 2007 while a tour of the North is scheduled for November.
