Donny Hathaway was & still is my Hero, plus Stevie, Aretha & James Brown. Sam Dees as a songwriter. Aretha's voice blew you away, James made you wanna get up & dance, Sam's lyrics made you concentrate on them, Sade relaxed you way down, but when Donny sung "(Lord) We need you right now" & "Sack full of dreams" & "I love you more than you'll ever know" he made me cry & when he died, I understood even more of what the lyrics meant to him. He just wanted a better world for everyone.

I have just received an e-mail telling me that the great inspirational Drummer Buddy Miles passed away 2 weks ago.
Says ;- George Allen "Buddy" Miles passed away late last night in Austin, Texas after a long fight with congestive heart disease.
I once saw this legend, do a Drum clinic at a University (in the 80's) & an audience in awe, watched him do a demonstration of drumming 4 beats to a bar with his left hand, whilst drumming 5 beats to a bar with his right hand - So every 20th beat they were together, would love to have that video in my collection now as a reminder.

But through all these years, Lyrics, Ballads 3/4/6 part Harmonies & Bass lines have dominated my life & still do. Real Soul hasn't changed that much since the 60's, it's gone back to it's roots, only production & technology has changed the music.

Long gone are the days as a young teenager, who would sit (up all night) with a portable radio in one hand & a microphone connected to a cassette recorder to tape tracks of Black music from illegal pirate radio stations, mainly because record stores didn't import music from the States then. Remember sitting up one night 'til 3.00am to catch the long-awaited ‘Music of my Mind’ album (whose release had been delayed like most of Stevies early albums). Synthesizers & Voice pipes hadn't been used in black music, it blew me away & it changed the face of Soul from thereon in.

Soul music never died, it just wasn't favourable in the 90's & 2000's. Disco/Soul & Pop/Soul dominated, but it seems to be raising its head again with the likes of Anthony Hamilton, Brian McKnight, Joe & Frank McComb.

Who I'd like to meet: Martin Luther King, just to shake his hand & thank him for his inspiration under adversity. John F Kennedy (who tried to make a change-& was prevented). Stevie Wonder (as an 11 year old Genius)to watch in awe. The Winans family for my religion when times were rough. Spike Milligan (who although was a manic depressive) made us laugh out loud & helped mould my outlook on having fun every day. Dr Phil & Oprah Winfrey to thank them for their enrichment.
