In 1995 singer/songwriter Isaac Vander Schuur was experimenting with a sound that he heard in his head. It was a culmination of Lo-Fi Underground Rock n’ Roll (not unlike early Velvet Underground records he was listening to at the time) and futuristic Bowie/Eno sounding keyboards and loops. He finished 9 unreleased cassettes in 3 1/2 years and showed them to virtually no-one. Later he would refer to this as the cata-vault, meaning the first step to jump start a concept he would eventually act on and refine with a band.
The Hat Madder’s first actual roster was formed in Austin, TX in 2004, nearly a decade after putting pen to paper for the first batch of droany, upbeat pop songs. After several lineup changes and a lot of rehearsing the band finally started playing gigs throughout Austin’s Red River , 6th Street and South Congress Districts. The Hat Madder began sketching rough and early versions of the songs that would later show up on “Friend of the Devil” in Early 2005. With the completion of writing and beginning the recording process, the band subsequently began to fall apart. With this and mounting family crisis, Isaac moves back to his native Michigan home in late 2005, and attempts to continue performing material with members of Things Without Wings. After the demise of Things Without Wings, Isaac forms the band he’d always hoped to acquire in mid 2006. With him would be Lansing juggernaut Mark Jagmin on Drums, David Brunger on Bass Guitar with sonic spread and precision loftiness,( to replace the previous, Aaron Pangborn 2006-2008) ,and auxiliary noise specialist, cousin and long time friend/cohort Doobie from their home town of Sidney, Michigan.
The recipe was complete, the record was finished and the songs kept pouring out.
2oo8 has brought the band an international tour de France; spots on compilation CD’s with the likes of The Deadly Sins, Modey Lemon and Of Montreal; a music video written and performed for Harley Davidson owners shown in front of 50,000 patrons at the 105th celebration in Milwaukee, WI and a constantly growing grassroots following at shows in and around Michigan.
The Hat Madder sound is best described as Garbage Can/Indie/Glam. Influences have included the likes of Sonic Youth, The Pixies, DEVO, Shudder to Think, The Afghan Whigs and 90’s indie rock poets Archers of Loaf. Their loud and energetic live shows have quickly created an eager fan base. The Hat Madder has just released its debut full length CD “Friend of the Devil”, and are currently touring in support of it.
