The Eyes Wide Open exhibition is a multimedia journey through the words, images, and sounds of the Iraq war. Visitors move through a vivid memorial to the war's soldier and civilian victims, a searing exposure of the statements told to the U.S. public to justify the war, a compelling outline of what the war is costing us at home, and finally to an interactive, easy way to contribute their voices to changing our country's course toward peace. 1022 pairs of boots (Soliders and Marines) sit in Chicago's Loop as a Memorial to the 1022 killed as of this day 9/16/2004

Lori Piestewa
On March 23, PFC Lori Piestewa and her company were ambushed near Nasiriyah, Iraq. She and her company were considered MIA. After an attempt to free American prisoners of war it was learned that Lori Piestewa, as well as several other members of her company, did not survive the ambush.
Since then many people have joined to make sure that Lori Piestewa's memory is not forgotten. Here are some highlights of those efforts:
The American Indian College Fund announced it has established a college fund in honor of Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, who is believed to be the first American Indian woman killed in combat. Piestewa, a Hopi Indian from Tuba City, Ariz., died in southern Iraq. She was a single mother with a son, 4, and a daughter, 3.
The scholarship will go toward any remaining unmet financial needs for college that her children have when they become college age, after taking into account other scholarships that have already been established for them. Any remaining funds will be used to underwrite an annual scholarship to a tribal college or university for a female American Indian military veteran.
A fund has been set up for the family of Lori Piestewa, a mother of two children who was the first U.S. female soldier killed in the Iraq war. During the National Indian Gaming Association's (NIGA) 2003 Annual Trade Show and Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, a moment of silence was observed and prayers were offered, led by Color Guards from the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and the Oneida Indian Nation of Wisconsin. An honor song was performed by Southern Nation drum group. Over the three-day conference, NIGA received over $85,000 in pledges to be given to the Lori Piestewa Memorial Fund.
The Grand Canyon State Games announced the inaugural Lori Piestewa National Native American Games to honor Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, believed to be the first Native American woman killed in combat. The games were held July 17-20, 2003 throughout northern Arizona and attracted thousands of participants from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii.
"We are grateful that the family of Lori Piestewa is allowing her name to be used with the inaugural National Native American games, " said Erik Widmark, executive director Grand Canyon State Games. "We accept this honor with great humility and profound responsibility. Lori's passion for sports will be emblematic of the energy, enthusiasm and commitment the participants will put forth in this inaugural national competition."

Squaw Peak in north-central Phoenix will be renamed Piestewa Peak. The State Board on Geographic and Historic Names waived its five-year waiting period and approved the change by a 5-1 vote before a cheering crowd after a four-hour hearing. The board sided with dozens of supporters who said that the word "Squaw" is offensive and that the mountain should be renamed after Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, pronounced py-ESS-tuh-wah. The Hopi from Tuba City was the first female American Indian soldier to be killed in combat.

On April 20, 1999, in a Littleton, Colorado, USA high school, two angry teenage gunmen began shooting their fellow students. Some students were targeted and shot because of their faith in Jesus Christ. Cassie Bernall was a 17 year old student who was shot and killed as a result of her faith. Her death has sparked a spiritual revival among youth all over America. As a result of this tragedy, many young people have come to know the Lord Jesus Christ. Cassie Bernall did not die in vain

Rachel Joy Scott was a beautiful 17 year old girl

who wanted to make an impact on the world through kindness and compassion. Her life ended on April 20, 1999 when she was shot and killed at Columbine High School, but her legacy has now reached around the world. Her story has impacted millions of people through a series of books, television documentaries, and live events where people heard her family speak about her.

Rachel left behind 6 diaries that were full of amazing predictions through poetry, pictures, and statements. She wrote that she would die at a young age.
She wrote that she would be a homicide victim. She referred to the halls of Columbine as the "halls of a tragedy" in one of her last poems.
But she also wrote about impacting the world. She shared with her friends that she would have an impact on the world, but that she would not live to be 20 years old! At age 13 she wrote on the back of an old dresser: "These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott, and will someday touch millions of people's hearts".
Her final drawing inspired a book, written by her parents, called "Rachel's Tears". That drawing was a picture of her eyes shedding 13 tears that touch a rose and turn to blood drops. The rose is growing out of a Columbine plant and is connected to a verse from the Bible that says, "Greater love has no man than this, that a man would lay his life down for his friends".
Within 2 hours of Rachel drawing that picture 13 people had been killed at Columbine: A teacher and 12 students. That week was Easter, or Passover Week, and just 2,000 years earlier another teacher and 12 students had impacted the world.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease that is relatively common in the U.S. Cystic fibrosis affects multiple parts of the body including the pancreas, the sweat glands, and the lungs. When someone has cystic fibrosis, they often have lots of lung problems. The cause of their lung problems is directly related to basic problems with diffusion and osmosis in the large airways of the lungs.
People without cystic fibrosis have a small layer of salt water in the large airways of their lungs. This layer of salt water is under the mucus layer which lines the airways. The mucus layer in the airways helps to clear dust and other inhaled particles from the lungs.

Billy Jack is a half-breed, half white and half Indian. After returning from Vietnam, he turned his back on his white heritage to live as an Indian. As a result, he's the self-appointed protector of the local reservation. A school for troubled kids called the Freedom School has been established on the reservation, and Billy has his hands full trying to protect it. There are many things that make this one of America's greatest movies. I think it provides insight into the clash of the cultures of the time. You can see the emerging hippie culture trying to establish itself. They feel there has to be more to life than consumerism and PTA meetings, and they truly want to make the world a better place. You also see the other side, as the members of the "establishment" strive to keep things from changing. Although the film is biased toward the left, it lets you understand both sides.

When someone has cystic fibrosis, they often have lots of lung problems. The cause of their lung problems is directly related to basic problems with diffusion and osmosis in the large airways of the lungs.
People without cystic fibrosis have a small layer of salt water in the large airways of their lungs. This layer of salt water is under the mucus layer which lines the airways. The mucus layer in the airways helps to clear dust and other inhaled particles from the lungs.

Billy Jack is a half-breed, half white and half Indian. After returning from Vietnam, he turned his back on his white heritage to live as an Indian. As a result, he's the self-appointed protector of the local reservation. A school for troubled kids called the Freedom School has been established on the reservation, and Billy has his hands full trying to protect it. There are many things that make this one of America's greatest movies. I think it provides insight into the clash of the cultures of the time. You can see the emerging hippie culture trying to establish itself. They feel there has to be more to life than consumerism and PTA meetings, and they truly want to make the world a better place. You also see the other side, as the members of the "establishment" strive to keep things from changing. Although the film is biased toward the left, it lets you understand both sides.
Matoaka was the beautiful and lively daughter of Powhatan, ruler of the land that the English named Virginia. "Pocahontas" was her childhood nickname, translated as "little wanton," meaning she was playful and hard to control. Pocahontas saved the struggling Jamestown colony from extinction twice.
