      Top of The Court (1984)

The Top of The Court was an all-ages music venue located in Seattle at 1524 15th Ave West above the notorious Back Court Tavern. I ran this club with my business partner Ledyard (Ledge) Slee, with occasional technical assistance from Ray Ogden. The club had a short life thanks to the efforts of the Seattle City Council. Short lived maybe; but as history goes, this place rocked.

1984 was a heady time in Seattle's music scene and the Top of the Court was there in the middle of it all. Really just a small hall with a stage, the space stretched the idea of intimate to a new level. We had a six channel Tapco board that I got from Tommy O'Neill, a pair of Altec VOTs, and a custom Phase Linear amp powering the FOH. Monitors were Randall wedges powered by a Tapco cp500m. Very primitive. We also had a real sophisticated 4 channel lighting rig. Refreshments could be purchased from the vending machines!

The space might not have been much to look at but the bands that played and the fans that shook the building more than made up for any lack of ambiance.

The roster of bands ran the gambit from New Wave, 60's Pop, Hardcore Punk, Goth, Rockabilly, Seattle Folk, and what was to become known to the world as Alternative and Grunge.

A number of these bands went on to the big time. The Young Fresh Fellows were already becoming local legends (they hold the record for attendance-the building was literally rocking and of course, the fire department had to show up that night); The U-Men had already reached that status several years before. The Walkabouts were just beginning to build an audience.

Two well-known bands played their very first shows in this hallowed hall: Sound Garden (opening for The U-Men) and Green River (whose members went on to form Pearl Jam and Mudhoney).

The following is a partial list of the bands that graced the stage. If you're not listed, contact me and I will update. Jamie Jones, March 2004.
