“If you are what you eat.. then I must be music ‘cause I live, eat, breathe, and sleep music” is how D.O.T describes his passion for music. D.O.T was born Etanie Samuels in Spanishtown, Jamaica to Lorna Jean Facey and Tony Samuels. Because Lorna was a single mother she would take Etanie everywhere she went. She would bring to reggae reviews, which is where several bands would perform live. At one of these concerts Etanie became intrigued with Dennis Brown’s ability to move the crowd. Etanie observed the emotion Dennis evoked out of people and it made him want to do the same thing. It was then he decided he was going to be a recording artist.
Life was not easy for Etanie and his mother. The comforts of an indoor bathroom or kitchen were not luxuries that were afforded. In search for a better opportunity Lorna came to New York alone to make a better life for herself and her son.
Etanie would visit his mother during school breaks and summer vacations. It was here that he first heard Wu Tang Clan. The group’s album made him fall in love with hip-hop. Etanie would lock himself in his room and write songs to beats on the album all day long. Eager to record, Etanie tried to record over the Wu Tang cassette. It was his unsuccessful attempt that made him determined to record in a studio one day.
At 11 Etanie came to New York to live with his mother in South Jamaica, Queens. Eager to fit in with his classmates he began working for his uncle’s flooring company at 15 so he could impress his classmates with his expensive style. At first the money was suffice but Etanie was eager to record. He began hustling as a “side job”. Although he was hustling Etanie was a good student. Although he had many recorded songs and the ability to pursue recording full time, Etanie went to the Art Institute of Ohio to pursue culinary arts. While in his room he recalls a dream in which a man came to him and told him that he was making a mistake by being in school. Etanie woke up and returned to New York two days later to pursue his career.
Upon his return to New York Etanie named himself D.O.T and decided Atlanta would be the best place to begin his career and build a studio. Etanie moved to Atlanta in the summer of 2001. While working for his uncle’s company he began building his studio and recording. About a month later D.O.T received news of his sister’s death. This hit him hard because not only did her lose her and her unborn child, he lost his biggest supporter.
After his sister’s death D.O.T began hustling again. Because his living situation became unsafe D.O.T decided he would return to New York to pursue his career. In 2006 D.O.T created UNUSUAL ARTZ LLC. Since then he has licensed and trademarked his company and its logo to pursue his dream in making his music move the world. D.O.T has released two mix tapes: “A Mean 16 Volume 1” and “A Mean 16 Volume 2”. He has appeared on Shalone’s “OurBit Presents: Shalone I Smell Money”.
“I want to make UNUSUAL ARTZ a brand, a household name. I have been provided the theater and audience, and I bring the orchestra, chorus, and the actors. All the audience has to do is sit back and enjoy the show that I have produced for them.”
