In 30 years as a bandleader, Vince Giordano has become the authority on recreating the sounds of 1920s and '30s jazz and popular music. "I just love the energy of the early jazz," says Giordano. "I wanted to recapture some of that."
Early appearances with Leon Redbone and on the Prairie Home Companion and lending his talents to Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Cotton Club, led to working with Dick Hyman’s Orchestra in half a dozen Woody Allen soundtracks then as a bass player in Sean Penn’s band in Woody’s Sweet and Lowdown. He and the Nighthawks were featured in Gus Van Sant’s film Finding Forrester, in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Robert DeNiro’s film, The Good Shepherd, Tamara Jenkin's The Savages and recently Vince has been working with Sam Mendes’ film: Revolutionary Road, and Away We Go - due in 2009; plus Michael Mann’s film Public Enemies, due in 2009.
Also a big-band historian and collector, Giordano has more than 32,000 scores in his collection. In addition to playing the string bass, Giordano is a multi-instrumentalist on tuba, bass saxophone, banjo, rhythm guitar, piano and drums. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are renowned on the New York scene for their commitment to preserving and authentically presenting 1920s jazz and popular music.

Vince! I'm so excited to hear the new Brown Brothers saxophone CD that Danny's releasing - knowing that you've graced it with your bass sax glory is more than a thrill. Much love from Mr. Tolentino and myself...
Vince G is a national treasure. It was great seeing him in the Aviator and at Sophies 2. Previous to seeing his band I only knew 20's music from 78's. Then came Vince and the Nighthawks displaying the FULL DYNAMIC RANGE for which I will always be in his debt. With todays music talent non-existant it's nice to know one man still does it right.
"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
