Vintage Pocket: Acoustic rock with a twist. The band draws influences from classic music of the past such as Tower of Power, Billy Joel, The Funk Brothers, and Elton John; as well as modern-day powerhouses such as Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, Jamie Cullum, and John Mayer. Vintage Pocket is able to create a unique blend of music that’s easy to listen to and hard to disagree with. The talented quartet consists of Erik Smith (guitar, vocals), Owen Peth (keys, vocals), Greg Abbot (drums), and Jim Steiner (bass). The bands’ varied musical style fuses acoustic and alternative rock with various elements of funk and soul.
Formerly known as Erik Smith and the Yes Men, the band formed at Washington State University, where Erik and Owen attended college. They picked up Jim from the nearby University of Idaho, and began making music. After two solid years of gigging and touring the west coast, they established themselves as a capable group, recognized as a band that will “Build and improve on the local indie-rock scene” (The Moscow-Pullman Daily News). After graduation, the band members moved to Portland, Oregon to pursue their career as a group. There they picked up drummer Greg Abbot and became Vintage Pocket.
Guitarist and vocalist Erik Smith hails from Omaha, Nebraska. He is a self taught guitarist with a talented voice and a keen sense of music. As quoted by Jake from Ether Hour, “His vocals are un-paralleled.” Erik writes complex, grasping songs that are both catchy and enjoyable.
Keyboardist and vocalist Owen Peth, raised on a farm in northern Washington, is an exceptional multi-instrumental musician. His additional songwriting and sharp vocals add a full bodied sound to the band. Owen’s harmonious versatility allows him to blend smoothly with his musical surroundings.
Bassist Jim Steiner, an Idahoan, was brought up around music and since then has never set it aside. His steady, less-is-more technique ties the band together with clever licks and perfect precision. Not to mention his occasional slap-bass style that draws people out of their seats.
Drummer Greg Abbot, a native of Maine, is a solid in-the-pocket drummer. His funky style blends rock and fusion with jazzy overtones, while providing a concrete backbone to groove with. The newest member of the band, Greg, brings a distinctive influence to the new sound of Vintage Pocket.
The band’s versatile sound is quickly gaining popularity in the Northwest. “Every song has its own personality, sound, and vision,” says Andres Sena, DJ of 90.7 FM KZUU. Their music, under the name Erik Smith and the Yes Men, can be purchased on itunes, cdbaby.com, and through their myspace website. Vintage Pocket can be seen currently at venues throughout Portland and Vancouver, and upcoming shows will always be posted on their myspace webpage.
