Music
In terms of rock and pop, it started off in the early 60's in the Northwest with local-hero bands like The Sonics and the Kingsmen. And then came all the rest. Since I never really connected much with French pop music, I was forced back into my roots over here. I like anything with some originality. Suggestions more than welcome.
Movies
Anything well written, even standard genre films (thrillers, action, police, romantic comedy). I have a soft spot for good dialogue, and can forgive just about anything else if that exists.
Television
In France: a couple of music shows like Manu Katche's One Shot Not, or to a (much) lesser extent, Taratata. Otherwise, simply, I prefer imported American series (Dr. House and a few other generic police shows). I don't have cable (just as well), thus the pickings are few over here. France just isn't cutting edge, when it comes to general audience pop culture areas like TV, pop music or... with a few exceptions, film. It does have OTHER things, of course...
Books
Everything from everywhere... lately, middle eastern and eastern European writers. Quite a bit of non-fiction dealing with environmental and geo-political issues. And history, as always. French fiction is always interesting (it's one of the things they do well, if not very, very well...)
Heroes
Al Gore. Chief Crazy Horse. Francis Bacon. Nicholas Hulot. Buckminster Fuller. Edgar Allan Poe. Lincoln Steffens. Sherwood Anderson. Sandy Koufax. Frank Lloyd Wright. John Dos Passos. Elisabeth I. John Stanford. Rachel Carlson. John Lennon. William Shakespeare. Winston Churchill. Bertrand Russell. Saul Bellow. M.L. King. Frank Zappa. Lech Walesa. Howard Hughes. Norman Mailer. Michael Moore. Kurt Cobain. Jim Bouton. William the Conqueror. Cassius Clay. Albert Einstein. Gary Larson. Robert Fisk, Katherine Hepburn. Iggy Pop. Samuel Clemens. Lewis & Clark. Jimi Hendrix. Perhaps Obama. Sometimes even myself.
About me:
Originally from the Northwest -- Washington State -- but I've been in France so long I'm Mid-Atlantic, when not completely French-fried.... What am I doing here? Living, and nicely at that. France is a great place to live and raise a family.
Writer (Novels/film scripts), I teach and translate. I'm now working on a project done in collaboration with a partner.
Iconoclast and a host of other foibles... but like any fine wine (or even a regular one), I'm better at dinner...
Yes I can communicate in French (oui, parler Franglais) if you're not too picky about grammar and spelling, yes I live close to Paris. No, I don't have room for visitors....... SHEEE-ITT. And finally, yes, I will add people I haven't contacted personally and I do try to respond most of the time.
Thanks for dropping by.
Finally, here are some non-copyright jeopardized works available. (They are available on Scribd.com, just look me up.) For starters, here's something written in the early 80's:
Who I'd like to meet: Writers and Poets. Literary Publishers, Editors and Agents. Journalists. In the arts: Painters, Sculpters, Musicians. In the film world: Directors, Screenwriters, Producers, Editors, Cinematographers, Actors, Art Directors, Agents (novels/screenplays), Managers, Execs, Documentarians, Location Managers, Production Managers, Effects people, Gaffers, Set Designers, PAs, Choreographers, Casting, Publicity, Animators, Distributors, Digital Artists. In other words: artists in general, and anyone else with either a creative bent or who is interested in art.
I do believe I will make that migration. Very soon, in fact. MS doesn't even let non-members view your full page anymore - which for me was sort of the point. I'll look you up as soon as I get it going.
EXTRAIT:::http://www.wobook.com/WBtc25a2Lg6kBl6F/Rottenweiss.html A++

Marc! Thanks, brother! Yea, I laugh a little because for purposes of theme I traded the Yamaha 800 that I actually tooled around America on for the more "American" bike in the poem - but really, who's buying those damn things: Trust fund bikers?
