About me:
Ever felt like the world is happening all around you but you don't know what to do?

A Little Less Conversation is a local magazine created for people who want find out how to live more sustainable lifestyles, learn about local issues or just discover new and interesting skills, (ones that aren't dictated to you by some fat guy in a suit or involve copious amounts of tie dye).

We are run as an open cooperative and are always looking for new people to bring fresh ideas to the table. If you're interested in getting involved, just drop us an email via this myspace.

The aim of the magazine is to empower ourselves and our communities to take more practical action - no matter how big or small - and be a part of making this world a slightly less crazy place to live. For everyone.

Campaigns

Launched to coincide with the bicentennial abolition of slavery, The Truth Isn't Sexy campaign aims to highlight the realities of sex trafficking and mobilise support for the few organisations working to support women who have been trafficked. Throughout the UK, TTIS Campaign Collective's are being set up to fundraise £2,500 in order to buy beer mats for at least 40 pubs in and around their home town. Designed to catch the viewers attention by imitating telephone box calling cards, one side portrays an enticing image whilst the other highlights the brutal reality of trafficked women.

For more info on the campaign, check out The Truth Isn't Sexy and come along to the Leeds TTIS fundraising events to show your support and have a good evening!

Following two Film & Food fundraisers at Moorish Cafe and an open mic at the Brudenell, over £450 has been raised! Thanks for all your support, and please keep checking back for details of future events.

Hauschka
Having studied classical piano for ten years, Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann's work as Hauschka is based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the 'prepared' piano. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm, which he's taken around the world - in the USA with Múm, in Japan with Colleen, and a debut, sold-out London show with Max Richter. Hauschka's music is a thing of beauty - intertwined melodies and rythyms that flit between gorgeously lush and complex and stunning minimalism.

Gareth S. Brown
With influences as diverse as Eastern European folk music, funeral marches and jewellery boxes, Gareth creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.

Saturday: 8/11/2008 @ The Holy Trinity Church, Leeds. Doors 8.30pm.

A Forest of Sound presentation. £5 adv / £7 on the door.
Tickets available at Jumbo, Crash & We Got Tickets.

For this Forest of Sound we’re getting together with our good friends at Misplaced Music to celebrate the release of Gareth S.
Brown’s new album, The Gallows on Misplaced Music (order here).

Bracken makes simply stunning music - walls of ambient sound, dark dub bass and atmospheres, destroyed and re-claimed found sound, beats that range from over-powering to perfectly understated.

Gareth S. Brown creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.

Sketches for Albinos makes a sound that manages to be both truly heartfelt and organic, but also encompassing the majestic glacial soundscapes that would make the likes of Tim Hecker or Fennesz proud.

The Declining Winter are a new musical project, led by Richard Adams, the co-founder of Domino Records group Hood, and is influenced by the music of Low, The Durutti Column, Songs of Green Pheasant and more. They have recently toured with ambient legends, Stars of the Lid. Live they’re a wonderful, beautiful, pastoral experience.

Friday: 1/8/2008 @ The Packhorse, Leeds. Doors 7.30pm. £5 on the door.

Koen Holtkamp is no stranger to producing beautiful music. Expect layers of warm organic noise and found sound combine to make pieces that are both gorgeously minimalistic and endlessly deep. He's making the trip over from New York to celebrate the launch of his new album on Type records, and you'd be a fool to miss him!

Gorgeously organic music that washes over you and through you - the best of all ambient music understands the importance of holding back, of understatement, of beauty - Pausal achieve this, and more. Stunning stuff for a night of pure sonic bliss.

Forest of Sound's favourite one man laptop genius, randomNumber, comes back to regale us with his excellent and deeply inventive brand of electronica. There's a reason that he's so energetic in his performance - his music is brilliant. Simple. As.

Easily one of the most important bands of our times (and we don't say that lightly), Stars of the Lid are the highpoint of the ambient genre. Their influence on the music that really matters over the last decade has been huge, and we're incredibly honoured to be hosting them again in Leeds. This gig will be very very different, and very very special. Stars of the Lid have excelled at designing subtle, minimalist epics which sound like they're being played on a single multifaceted organic instrument.
A wise man once described SOTL as "divine classical drones without the tedious intrusion of drums, or vocals.
"

The Declining Winter is the musical project of Richard Vincent Adams of Leeds UK, the co-founder of the continuing group Hood and a full time stricken office worker.
What does it sound like? Richard says "cassette tapes spilling out of the glovebox of a 1970's Datsun Sunny somewhere in the north of England, captured on Super 8 film".
He's not far off. Live he is joined by a few more people to bring the beautiful pastoral feel to life. Wonderful stuff.

Golden Diskó Ship combines a mass of instruments and found objects (guitars, viola, glockenspiel, sticky tape, compact disc cases, toys…) together with perfectly crafted laptop electronica to form a world of beautiful, original and individual music - “…dreamy, experimental folk electronica that sounds like walking on the beach with the sun in your eyes."

Hands and Fingers makes minimally gorgeous cerebral music. He mixes samples, acoustic guitars, glockenspiel and ambient atmospheres with drum breaks that have been described as "Tortoise having a fight with Four Tet in the dark, with John Bonham trying to split them up". It's ace. Very ace.

The Moor Music Festival

Jan 23 2008 4:48 PM

It seems like years since the last Moorfest happened and to be honest I think the weather was very much a factor in whether people enjoyed themselves or not. Some thrived in the mud whilst others wept until their dads could pick them up. Moorfest is still carving an identity for itself and in the three years that it has been established I think I can say that the one thing that most people love about it is the friendly atmosphere, and this gig is a good opportunity to meet up with friends that perhaps you haven't seen since the festival, to make new friends, enjoy quality music, get a flavour of Moorfest if you haven't already been and also to talk to the organisers in order to give your opinions on how to improve the festival.
We'll also be projecting your favourite photos that you've taken from previous Moorfests to create a live mashup that will adorn the walls of the Brudenell so please send them to bandsformoorfest@yahoo.co.uk and make sure that everyone in the picture is cool for you to use them like this.

There'll be much more to boot like gorgeous organic food, t-shirt stall, films and raffles to win tickets to Moorfest 4 which we're working on right now and aim to make it the best yet.

We really appreciate your continued support in making Moorfest what it is and hope to see you all there.

Team Moorfest x

Damo Suzuki is a legend! Best known for his stint as the legendary Krautrock pioneers Can as their singer in the 70s, Damo now tours the world to hook up with the best of local musicians to produce stunning sets of improvised music. We cannot stress how good this will be enough - you've never experienced anything like a Damo Suzuki show before, even if you've been to a Damo Suzuki show before!

This extra special Forest of Sound will see Damo backed by the collective brilliance that is The Window Right and The Pattern Theory.

Tickets are £6 advance from We Got Tickets and £7 on the door.

THE TRUTH ISN'T SEXY

Many thanks to all who have offered their help with this campaign so far.

There is still time to contribute artwork for the exhibition and auction which will raise funds to support women trafficked into the sex industry, and towards raising awareness of the truths involved in prostitution and trafficking around the world, including that within the UK.

Please see my current MySpace blog for information on how to donate your artwork.

Human trafficking represents the most hideous incarcination of globalization. This month's issue of New Internationalist features many reports and stories from and about women who have been trafficked for sex. The following is one of these stories, and acts as further impetus to get involved...

'Srey is scared. She instantly distrusts the hard-eyed, made-up lady called 'auntie'. But she obays her mother and leaves with just the clothes on her back and her favourite rag doll.
Srey is about to enter a seedy brothel in downtown Phnom Pehn - and there is nothing she can do about it. She has no protector or rescuer. Three days later, her face caked with mascara and ruby red lipstick, her body clad in a purple silk sarong, her virginity is sold to a portly Japanese businessman for $500. He got to use her for five days during which time he brutalised the terrified child. For the next two weeks, Srey's body was sold for $10 a customer to American, British and German paedophiles - sex tourists who care only about what their money can buy.
Then, as if someone flipped a switch, Srey's value plummeted. She was now used goods and worth only $2 a customer. Three months later, her body racked with gonorrhea and HIV, she was sent home to die.'

The Truth Isn't Sexy, please get involved, view my blog to see how.
