LET'S MEET AT THE SAINT PARTY ...
MARCH 21, 2009 ... ROSELAND, NYC
================================
The Black Party stands alone as one of the rawest shows on Earth. About as far away from the atmosphere of White Party as you can get, this New York institution has been going strong since before the Saint shuttered its hallowed doors and became Saint at Large, which now produces the party. This isn't the party for you if you're more interested in flagging than fisting - this is the night that we let it all hang out, literally and figuratively. The DJs are always the best of the best, pulling out all the stops for this yearly bacchanal. The shows are dazzling and disturbing, with offerings such as cupping demos, hot wax displays, men with vaginas, and even the infamous castration scene that played out one year. It's not a night for the mild-mannered. But if you have the sheer brute fortitude to handle it, this is the party you will never forget.

STONEWALL PRIDE 2009 ... 40 YEARS
Music
ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN...
Thurs. 10.2.08
Radio City Music Hall ...
New York City....
[=]
Echo and the Bunnymen's 1984 album Ocean Rain is one of those iconic pieces of music of the post punk/new wave era. A sweeping landscape of sound, imagery and emotion highlighted by a swirling orchestration. It is also the bands crowning achievement. The band are celebrating their 30th anniversary by putting on 3 special shows in London, their hometown of Liverpool and last night in New York. The first part of the show highlighted the bands non Ocean Rain material including US hits Lips Like Sugar and Bring On the Dancing Horses. Their cover of the Doors classic People are Strange got the hometown crowd going when they segwayed into NYC's own Lou Reed and Walk on the Wild Side. The first set ended with a killer version of early fave The Cutter. There was a short intermission and then the band took to the stage complete with a 10 piece orchestra to perform the entire Ocean Rain album from start to finish. The 9 songs were performed almost exactly
as they are on the album with the strings just adding so much more than they ever did on record. The highlights were the majestic Nocturnal Me, the manic Thorn of Crowns, the haunting The Killing Moon and best of all, the title track. Singer Ian McCulloch complete with trademark dark shades and overcoat, never sounded better. When he sang the "screeeeaming from beanath the waaaaves" line at the end of Ocean Rain, it sent shivers down the spine. The show was highlighted by 2 big video screens on either side of the stage which showed old pics of the band from back in the 80's. Seeing pics of bassist Les Pattison, who left the band in 1999, and drummer Pete de Fritas, who sadly passed away in 1988 were nostalgic. All in all, a very magical night for all who attended.

MY MORNING JACKET
Festival Pier
Phildelphis PA
FRI. 9.5.08
Some bands out there don't translate well on stage. They are great on record but for some reason don't connect all that well live. My Morning Jacket do not fall into any of these categories. For those of you unfamilar, they are a 5 piece from Louisville, KY who have been around since the late 1990's. They play an eclectic mix of country rock, indie rock, funk, and psychedelic. They especially are known for a heavy reverb sound. Their concert last week at the Festival Pier in Philadelphia showed why they are definitely one of the best American bands today. The band played a blistering 2.5 hr set performing most of the songs off their latest cd Evil Urges mixing in songs from their other 4 cds as well. Lead singer and guitarist Jim James really fed off the crowds energy and vice versa. This band is just incredible live. There is such a connection between band and audience. Too many great highlights to mention but a few of them have got to be the
songs Lay Low, Mahgeetah, Dondante, Aluminum Park, Highly Suspicious, One Big Holiday and the impromptu fireworks (in the rain) display over the BEN FRANKLIN BRIDGE as the band was playing Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt 2.
***
My only complaint was that since this was an outdoors show, it seemed that some people came just to get drunk and talk to their friends all night, not paying much attention to the band at all. You know when I go to a concert, I wanna hear the band, not some loser talk about his sex life. *** Show a little respect for this band!!!
Check out their very COOL video for Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt 2 below.

YAZ … New York City July 17, 2008 … Terminal 5 , 610 W 56 Street
[=]
[=]
A lot of the electronic music of the 1980's has been dismissed as being souless, cold, unemotional, basically a bunch of blips and bleeps on a computer. Well, YAZOO or YAZ as they were know in the US were one of the exceptions. The combination of keyboard wiz Vince Clarke and the soulful, powerful voice of Alison Moyet made some of the most infectious and influencial music to ever grace the dancefloors. Even though they were only together for about 2 short years and only released 2 albums, they are considered icons of the genre whose influence is stil being felt today.
Last night in NYC, as part of their ReConnected reunion tour, we finally got to witness that magic combination on stage. They played to a sold out crowd of aging new wavers, clubbers, gay muscle boys, downtown trendies and everyone in between. Though the gay boys certainly outnumbered the straights. People came from far and wide for the show, including a couple who had just flown in from Michigan (now those are some hardcore fans) For the next hour and a half, we were treated to most of the material off their 2 albums, "Upstairs at Eric's" and "
You and Me Both". After 25 yrs, they have not lost an ounce of their spark. Alison still has that amazing voice; and Vince is still tooling behind his keyboards.
Highlights included: Goodbye Seventies, Nobody's Diary, the haunting Winter Kills, club classics Situation and Don't Go. 2 personal highlights were Midnight, in which Alison had to stop the song because the crowd was singing so loudly, she lost her place and had to start over. And Only You, where the audience held up paper hearts in a touching tribute to them.
Even though this will probably be a one-time reunion, Alison will go back to her successful solo career; and Vince will go back to being one half of Erasure. For one time, we were all transported back to 1982 and it felt so GOOOODD!!!

FUNPLEX ... B52s...
[=}
Like their debut's late 70s music from new wave and garage rock, there's a lot about Funplex, the band's first album since 1992's Good Stuff, that says 2008 loud and clear. The visual elements that make the B-52's undeniably themselves-- Pierson's and Wilson's dos [the beehives are gone ]and dresses, Schneider's gaze and pose-- are present on the cover.
Though the band members' average age is now in the mid-50s, they still navigate their surroundings with the familar sounds of their older material they we love.
Funplex's songs are just as jubilant as they were on Cosmic Thing and Good Stuff, with bits of dark surf guitar, outer space, travel themes, and of course, kitsch culture bleeding through the high-gloss electro-pop. "Deviant Ingredient" brings some lounge and exotica along for the ride down to "Hot Corner" as the band transforms a 3 a.m. bus stop into a dance party. [I'll be using this cut as my closing song as some upcoming club events]. "Keep this Party Going", is the band's political bent on Washington, but in a pleasingly manner that would fit any era: "Take this party to the White House lawn/ Things are down and dirty in Washington!" , says it all. Another favorite is Ultraviolet" lines "There's a rest stop/ Let's hit the G-Spot!", or "Tell your skirt to take a hike!" , those were the good old days that only the B52s can capture with such campy lyrics.
The B52's Funplex is an album that let's you temporarily forget your troubles and giving over completely to the pleasures of getting down.
My favorite lines are; "talk to me and make me moan/ rock me down to the jellybone" ... yeah buddy that's what I like.

PUT SOME GRACE IN MY FACE ...
HURRICANE … Wall of Sound [Import]
Put some GRACE in my face …. I first got introduced to GRACE JONES from a fellow dj friend in NYC back in 1976, when he slipped on the turntables the 12” remixes “ THAT’S THE TROUBLE, 7:02 min” & “SORRY, 6:42 min.” by Ms. JONES on Beam Junction Records. I remember hearing her voice and instantly fell in love with her. The next day I had the 12” vinyl in my hands and playing them for the first time in Phila. that weekend. A year later in 1977 she released the 12” version of “ I NEED A MAN, 7:30 MIN.” that exploded on the club scene and gay men everywhere found a new diva to dance the night away to. I have seen Ms. Jones at least 6 times, the first time was in NYC in a club filled with hundreds of gay men screaming to a black goddess as she sang “I NEED A MAN” back to them, crawling on the floor, vamping and performing in a way that only Grace can perform. I saw her twice in Phila at the Pier Dance and met her at Club Egypt where I once spun on a night that she performed there. I also saw her at Roseland where she performed with a live tiger, which is avail on dvd. Her shows are always theatrical, haunting and spine tingling shows that are etched in your heart, mind and soul. Ms. JONES has evolved from modeling, singing , acting back to singing by releasing hr first cd [ as an import] in almost twenty years. I have been waiting for Ms. JONES to come out of retirement and bring her style back to the dance floors. Something we need in this dance age, where every song almost has the same endless thumping beat. GRACE brings rhythm back to the dance floors which seasoned dj’s should enjoy the change. The team behind “ Hurricane “ on Wall of Sound is Sly and Robbie who have worked with Ms. JONES on earlier projects to Phillip Sheppard. Also this year Grace Jones to play at the Meltdown Festival, having turned in the performance of the season, dressed only in a corset, thong and laser-firing headpieces this video can be seen on YouTube
“ This is my voice, my weapon of choice “ … Ms. JONES chants as the first song begins on “This is”. It has a nice reggae dance beat, which should go well in the clubs and should be a good remix candidate. The cd segues from song to song including “Williams’ Blood” is a song about the Jones’ family from her preacher father to her mother, brother and sister ends with a choir chanting “Amazing Grace” and the preacher announcing that GRACE JONES “is in the house” into the club hit “Corporate Cannibal” that is being played in NY clubs with the lyrics: “ Pleased to meet you, pleased to have you on my plate
your meat is sweet to me
your destiny
your fate
you’re my life support, your life is my sport
I’m a man-eating machine .”
Not a high energy dance hit, it’s a deep , haunting and typical Grace attitude for the fans. The video to “Corporate Cannibal” is done in the typical warped JONES style.
“I’m Crying [ Mother’s Tear] “ is a slow heart felt tribute to her mother. “Well Well Well” starts off in true old fashioned GRACE JONES style as well as “Love You To Life”and Sunset Sunrise” . True GRACE fans will appreciate this throw back style to some of her earlier songs.
“Hurricane” which was released about three years ago as a remix for club dj’s did very well in clubs. This version is a laid back funk version with it’s lyrics ; "From cradle to grave"
I am woman, I am son!
I can give birth to sheep, I can give birth to son!
And I can be cool, soft as the breeze,
I'll be a hurricane, ripping up trees!”
“Devil In My Life” closes this cd, and is a deep, haunting song that evokes the dark side of GRACE. It let’s you know that GRACE JONES is alive and well and still the “diva” of the gay club underground scene and true “diva” to GRACE fans. Now all we need is this cd to be released in the states and a tour by Ms. JONES. Because I need some GRACE IN MY FACE.
Her other hits include “PULL UP TO THE BUMPER, , SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM, LA VIE EN ROSE, NIPPLE TO THE BOTTLE, MY JAMAICAN GUY, WALKING IN THE RAIN and WARM LEATHERETTE” to name a few.
And to this day seasoned dj’s still play them and like me close out the night with either “I NEED A MAN “ or “LA VIE EN ROSE” in true GRACE style.

[ MIND . BODY . SPIRIT ]
MIND - BODY - SPIRIT
Fr Michael is looking at starting a Bible study group that could meet one evening or on the weekend or Sunday after his last Mass of the day in the morning.
The Study could focus on Gay and Lesbian issues in the Bible as well as strengthening Biblical defenses against those who try to use the Bible for hateful ends.
Everyone, all denominations of Christianity and Judaism, would be welcome (even straight people!) and it would involve everyone's participation and discussion.
Either myself or Deacon Stefan could moderate the group. The Deacon is a real treasure in Biblical studies and particularly well versed in the "defense" aspects of the Bible.
If interested, please contact me at: Italpowerbehr1@AOL.Com
The web site is : www.ICAB-NorthAmerica.Com
If the guys have questions about services in the area...we can even have a private Gay only service on Sunday later in the day. We have Mass in South Heidelberg near Wernersville
My number for anyone with questions is 610 858 6929...that's my cell and its alright to call me with any questions
