About me:

The Arab American Institute (AAI) represents the policy and community interests of Arab Americans throughout the United States and strives to promote Arab American participation in the U.S. electoral system.

We focus on two main areas: campaigns and elections, and policy formation and research.

AAI strives to serve as a central resource to government officials, the media, political leaders and community groups and a variety of public policy issues that concern Arab Americans and U.S. – Arab relations.

Our Myspace page and youth outreach seeks to engage young Arab Americans in political activism, both through elections and by lobbying their members of Congress.

“A new generation of young Arab Americans has stepped forward to work on behalf of the Arab-American community. This new energy can be seen everywhere. On college campuses, young Arab Americans have become a dynamic force in student government and local community activism.”

–Dr. James Zogby, Washington Watch, May 5, 1997

I think the Arab nature is not to vote, to just accept the dictations of the leader until I suppose revolutions occur. But anyway, I want to be a person who does take part in Govt. and take advantage of the system the Constitution and Bill of Rights have set up for us Americans. I don't like that it seems just one vote won't count, or the paranoia that the votes are "miscounted" still if enough people become involved with the electoral process [[people from outside the old corrupt wings who probably killed MLK and Malcolm X, corrupt administrations who funded Saddam but then tried him 4 crimes they themselves funded - and their children hint the Bush family 4 starters]] I think we can assure a fair balance and experience that fair and equal justice that the Founders of this country had in mind when making the Declaration of Independence. so Yalla every one vote!! I can't wait 2 vote :) you have 2 start somewhere.

General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) www.sfgups.org 415-338-1908
San Francisco State University

In April 2005, the General Union of Palestine Students at San Francisco State University proposed something revolutionary, to begin a process of implementing a mural paying tribute to Edward Said and Palestinian culture on the University campus. This is the first mural of its kind a University in the United States. After over a year of painstaking efforts by the mural committee to follow the established process, the President of San Francisco State University, Robert A. Corrigan, prematurely denied the mural just before the final stage. It is 2007 and the mural is in jeopardy and needs your immediate help The SF State president, Robert Corrigan claims the mural represents a “culture of violence” and is “hate to Jews.” He is saying that the Palestinian house key and Handala are offensive but he does not explain why or what to support his claim. He allowed other murals up on the Cesar Chavez Student Center, such as the Malcolm X mural, the Cesar Chavez mural, the Filipino Mural, the Pan Asian and Pacific Islander Mural, which depict struggles of refugees and colonialism, however the administration has been trying to stop our mural since day one before they knew anything about it. Please sign the latest online petition, and/or writing a letter to President Corrigan from yourself or your organization, and/or financially support the legal process to show support for the mural and all its elements including the Palestinian house key and Handala! Go to www.sfgups.org for more info.

Dear friends,

Middle East Fellowship is proud to announce a wide variety of upcoming opportunities for you to serve the peoples of the Middle East and explore the region.

We invite you to join us for the fourth annual Palestine Summer Encounter program! Palestine Summer Encounter is a one to three month service-learning program in Bethlehem, Palestine with flexible dates. Participants live with a host family, study Arabic and volunteer with a local nonprofit or humanitarian organization. This will also be the first year we offer a nine week service learning program in Damascus, Syria! Additionally, we are currently recruiting participants for the Journey of the Magi 2007, a Pilgrimage for Peace. The Journey will begin in Hamadan, Iran. Those who join us for the entire program will have the chance to walk the entire length of the Middle East-from Iran to Israel and Palestine. We are also offering a number of shorter "Incarnational Pilgrimages" to the Holy Land in the Spring of 2007 (more details below).

The Journey of the Magi 2007 program is a re-enactmemt of the journey taken by the magi (or "wise men") from the Biblical Nativity Story. The pilgrimage is a joint effort between Christians and Muslims to honor Jesus (Issa), to pray for peace and to build bridges of understanding between Christian and Muslim communities. Journey members will walk and ride camels from Hamadan, Iran to the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank. The journey will also be divided into six two-week segments so you will be able to join us for any section of the program. For more information please visit http://www.middleeastfellowship.org/magi. The Journey will end on Christmas day when we will be joined by thousands of Palestinians for Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem as we walk the final stretch of the Journey from Manger's Field to the Nativity Church in Bethlehem.

Incarnational Pilgrimages 2007

Join us on a journey to the Holy Land this Spring 2007 as we discover the ancient church by taking an historical pilgrimage in the footsteps of Jesus, learning to respond as He would to the needs of the people and build relationships of encouragement and support. Meeting with Jewish and Palestinian organizations working for peace, we will consider the current situation and the role of the Church today and seek ways of building bridges of peace through interfaith dialogue. This will be a rich cultural experience as we meet local families, stay in their homes, taste fabulous Middle Eastern delicacies and receive their incredible hospitality. Vital service opportunities will be incorporated throughout the schedule.
Delegations are limited to fifteen people, so please select your first two choices for dates of preference and submit your application with $150 deposit by February 1 to Middle East Fellowship. More information:
http://www.middleeastfellowship.org/incarnational

Proposed Trip Dates: April 14 – 28, April 29 - May 12, and May 19 – June 2

Jan. 27 (Sat), 8:30 pm—Comedy Benefit, the Sultans of Satire: Middle East Comic Relief, Special 10th Edition

What's funny about the Middle East? Plenty! Is there any hope for peace? We think so...Nothing brings us together quite like humor and satire. This special 10th edition of the popular Levantine Cultural Center series, "Sultans of Satire" features Ahmed Ahmed, Maz Jobrani, Mike Batayeh, Elham Jazab, Aron Kader, Peter Shahriari, Gulden, Max Amini and Noel Elgrably, along with a very special mystery comedian...with Fariborz as the Master of Ceremonies! And special appearance by the Ya M.E.L.A. Middle East Dance Troupe...

Comedians of Muslim, Christian, Jewish and Bahai faiths, from diverse countries of the Middle East and North Africa, come together in the spirit of unity—and laughter!

This event is a benefit for Levantine Cultural Center, which has explored contemporary arts and cultures of the Mediterranean and Middle East, building bridges to peace since 2001. The center has presented more than 250 concerts, lectures, author events, comedy/satire shows, film screenings/Q & As, classes and other public programs. Levantine Cultural Center has worked with many nonprofit organizations and associations to help promote more in-depth and alternative information on the Middle East, as a needed counterweight to the constant barrage of bad news and negative messages (war, terrorism, corruption). In all the melee, watching the mainstream media about conflict in the Middle East, we forget the people, the rich cultures, and those who are working for peace every day.

The Sultans of Satire: Middle East Comic Relief is an occasion for topical satire and savage humor about our post-9/11 world. These young comedians of Arab, Iranian, Moroccan/Israeli and Turkish heritage spoof the "clash of civilizations" between "us" and "them"—between America/the West and the Arab/Muslim East. These Americans are funny people who also work steadily as dramatic actors in film, television and theatre (see comedian bios).

Saturday, Jan. 27, 8:30 pm, at USC's Bovard Auditorium, 3551 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles CA 90089. [Map]

Read what audience members commented about
previous Middle East Comic Relief shows.

Join us this special evening of edgy humor, where these stalwarts are certain to lampoon sacred cows, take poetic license and otherwise eliminate common ennui. Cosponsored by the Lebanese Club at USC, Namak Magazine, Persian Mirror, CODEPINK, Women For Peace, F.A. Daniels, the USC Armenian Students' Association, the USC Persian Student Association, Irandokht, and KPFK 90.7 FM. Honorary Committee: Saadoun & Barbara Al-Bayati, Jodie Evans & Max Palevsky, Councilman Eric Garcetti, Bana Hilal, Jean & Casey Kasem, the Mansouri Family, Suzy & Wally Marks, Anthony Saidy, Debbie & Ferris Wehbe, and Councilman Dennis Zine. Go to sponsor's page.

Advance reservations are required; early purchase recommended. Tix are $75 VIP (with post-event artists reception), $50 Preferred, $40, $30 and $20 students. Purchase your tix .. by clicking here or calling 310.559.5544.
