The phone rang… Sometimes, when it rained they would sit on the couch and watch TV. This time things were different, they weren’t on the couch at all. They were on the bed in their room watching TV on a smaller black JVC television. The speakers were rather quiet and the screen was small. These factors didn’t matter. When it rained, the TV was just an excuse to be together. There was no phone in the living room. Before this moment they had never encountered this problem. As the ringing continued, the possibility that the person on the other end would give up seemed to be getting smaller and smaller. The caller ID was in the kitchen and getting up was definitely not an option. There were two apparent choices, pull the phone out of the wall or answer it… and why was the answering machine not working? ‘Click’ Dan bit his lip as he rushed down the echoing hallway; neon lights flew past him as if they were being shot out of ray gun. Twenty feet ahead of him stood the thing that he hated more than any thing…the trophy case. Dan hated that trophy case more than anything…except that fucking answering machine. He clenched his fist and bit his lip. Actually Dan had never even known that his school had a trophy case, but that didn’t matter. Dan was angry; that’s all that mattered at this moment. It didn’t matter that glass when broken tends to make tuff guy fists bleed. What mattered right then was that Dan was angry, Dan was pissed, and Dan hated…no loathed that damn trophy case. “A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down. Now eat all this sugar, I will be back in twenty minutes.” She left. Mac loved sugar, but three cups seemed to be a little too much, plus he didn’t have a spoon. Mac looked down at the mound of sugar on the table. Tonight he was definitely going to have diarrhea. Mac licked his lips and was about to start with his meal when the door burst open. It was the Jr. Student Rescue Squad! Behind the Chief (Andy) was a bloody boy on a stretcher. Mac had seen him a few times in the hallways but in the hallways he definitely wasn’t so bloody. The beautiful mound of sugar was destroyed when the stretcher came toppling down on top of it. The nurse was going to very angry when she got back. Andy was blowing in to the bloody boys mouth excessively… it actually kind of looked like he was using his tongue but what ever Andy was doing it worked, the bloody boy sat up very abruptly and started spiting all over. Mac could tell now who the bloody boy was. It was Mac’s arch nemesis. From this point on things escalated so fast that it is physically impossible to tell the story accurately, all that any body knows is after everything was over there were three clones of both Mac and Dan, making six very angry adolescent boys in a room with three cups of sugar and Andy the Chief of the Jr. Student Rescue Squad. Andy was a smart boy, but he had never encountered any thing like this before. It was not long before Andy peed in his pants and started to cry like a 14 year old boy in an adult state prison. No one was picking up. Dan knew they were home, it was raining and they never left the house if it was raining. His principle, Mr. Prickly sat next to him waiting to speak to the parents of these three mischievous clones. The three Dan’s made small talk with one another as the phone continued to ring. The Mac’s were sitting on the right side of Mr. Prickly’s office in three plastic chairs that looked and felt exactly like every other chair in the school. ‘Click’ He rolled back into bed to cuddle with the woman he had loved for twenty years. Since the moment they had met they had been completely and utterly in love. He kissed her neck. “When Joe gets home he can tell you what happened, I don’t really understand it.” From that day on when ever it rained, they made a point to lay on the couch and watch TV, because the bed just seemed to be bad luck.
