"Not a cover band, but a maniacal tribute act, hell-bent on spreading the gospel of Johnny and June Carter Cash... " THE DENVER POST
The Gospel of Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash is an American icon whose music transcended norms, genres and expectations. Often landing outside the mainstream country music establishment, Cash still touched millions of individuals the world over with honest, stark descriptions of everyday life; referred to here with great reverence as the Gospel of Johnny Cash.
A Band Named Sue was born and raised in the Church of Rock & Roll and is on a mission to bring the sounds of Johnny Cash to the poor and uncultured masses. Formed in 2005, the band has created ingenious covers of classic Johnny Cash tunes. A Band Named Sue crafts more than just music, they strive to provide a spiritual experience with each and every performance.
Frontman Jason Haddock (vocals, guitar), was born 169 miles from Johnny Cash’s hometown of Dyess, Arkansas, and delivers the message with a fervent intensity. Brainwashed on Cash’s music at a young age, Haddock seems resigned to his calling with unquestioning acceptance, as if summoned by the Lord God Himself (the initials JC seem no mere coincidence).
Haddock is aided in this endeavor by faithful disciples to the Cash Gospel: Denver natives Joel Schneider (bass, vocals), Brian (Don’t Take Your Drums to Town) Topkoff (drums) and Miss Jody Rodney (vocals, guitar).
Schneider and Topkoff, who too spent their formative years exposed to the stark, punk ethic pioneered by Cash, effortlessly match a rockabilly bass line to a blistering, stripped down cadence. Together they add a distinct edge to this no frills tribute to the Man in Black.
Rounding out the line-up is Miss Jody. Not just another Denver native raised on Johnny and June, she is the vocal definition of clarity and warmth, delivering superb June Carter and backing vocals, and adding a new but classic element to songs you thought you knew, but will hear again for the first time.
A Band Named Sue is ready and available to deliver the Gospel of Johnny Cash from any pulpit. Their set list contains a wide range of classic Johnny Cash hits, many of the more obscure selections and a wide array of the Johnny Cash and June Carter duets. Visit them online at www.abandnamedsue.com, or better, catch them live, and be ready for the conversion.
Mark your calendar! Coming up 2 weeks from this Saturday.
