Dutch musician-composer and bandleader Ab Baars performs on tenor saxophone, clarinet and shakuhachi. He focuses mainly on the Ab Baars Trio, Duo Baars-Henneman and the ICP Orchestra.
In reviews Baars’ music has been characterized as joyfully obstinate, but surely appealing and as colourful as it is astonishing. It embodies the best typically Dutch improvised music has to offer. Although he seldomly uses recognizable song forms or ongoing swing rhythms, the music stays catchy, because it is stripped to the essence and clearly presented.
Baars adopted a very personal style, or ‘ab music’ as Misha Mengelberg calls it.
Wow, those horns are something else. Had to leave most of my clothes in Japan so I could back the double clarinet case into my suitcase in order to get on the plane with everything. Worth the sacrifice in socks and t-shirts!
The clarinets are incredible! And I am in love with the A clarinet. Unfortunately, the barrel is somehow jammed on it and I can't remove it. Have to get it fixed in Stockholm when I get there on Wednesday... Again, THANKS for helping with the instruments, and for the book- finished it last night and really enjoyed it. Seems Mr. Giacometti was pretty hard on himself...
