Are democracy and Islam compatible? What would an Islamic democracy look like? Would democracy in the Islamic world be in America's best interest? These are the question's Noah Feldman attempts to answer in After Jihad: America and The Struggle for Islamic Democracy.
He begins, in the first part of his book, by explaining that both Islam and democracy are flexible, that they both leave room to be interpreted. Islamist movements in many Muslim countries represent the only major advocacy of democracy, since they are the only ones able to criticize their governments. They do not, however, represent the more moderate Islam that the majority of Muslims adhere to. Islam, Feldman explains, teaches equality among all people, as well as individual liberty. The challenge is molding the Islamic perceptions of these ideals with that of modern democracy. Feldman argues that this is possible.
He then goes on to discuss the potential of democracy in different parts of the Muslim world, beginning with the countries that have already experienced some level of democracy. Iran is discussed as an example of a democracy developing in a very Islamic environment, Turkey as a secular state with a growing potential for democracy compatible with Islam, and Pakistan and South Asia as regions of developing Islamic democracy varying in stability and order.
It is, however, the Arab states that play the most pivotal role in the struggle for democracy. Feldman explains the diversity of the many Arabs states with a brief historical account of how Arab culture spread from the Arabian peninsula throughout the Middle East and North Africa, into the modern states and the various governments who control them. He discusses the problem for democracy in the oil-rich monarchies or Saudi Arabia and the other gulf states. That is, the wealth generated from oil revenues removes the need for the government to tax the people. This presents a problem for progression from monarchy to democracy because, so long as they have oil, they will be able to stay in power. For this reason, Feldman looks to the monarchies without oil, Morocco and Jordan, for a better shot at democracy. This is because they do not have the oil to support them, so economics is an immediate concern. The hope is that these countries will slowly transition their governments towards democracy. Comparisons are made to the monarchy in England, and its development into a constitutional monarchy, which, Feldman suggests, would be the best potential path for Jordan and Morocco. For dictatorships without oil, he offers little hope. Though there are those in those countries who support Islamic democracy, their voices are suppressed. He then professes hope for the future of Iraqi democracy in the section on oil rich dictatorships.
Though, for the immediate future, it may seem that supporting the mostly secular governments might be the safer bet, Feldman insists that backing the Islamist advocates for democracy would be the better option in the long run. It is his belief that the Islamic extremism that is the most visible is actually on its way out. He predicts that, if democratic government is established, that, in time, more fundamentalist leadership will slowly become less popular, and the people will begin to elect moderate Islamic leadership.

My name is Peter Abdul Malik Eliyahu Sabetai Andrew Casey. I have a plethera of nicknames, some of which I will list:
-Pete (not very complicated to be honest)
-LoGiQ (basically no one calls me this, but it was my assumed "rap name")
-Bunny (ask Steph)
-Schlomo (come on)
-Abdul (see "name")
-Muzzy (cuz I'm a "Muz" as they say)
-P.A.M.E.S.A.C. (thanks Mackett)
-Koshimello (it involved something with kosher mashmellows, not sure why)
-Puppy (all my Lisa Shah)
-Pita (Amira gets credit)
I'm half Irish and half Sephardi (Spanish Jew) and I live in Bethpage, NY. I love New York. I don't plan on leaving insha'Allah (God Willing).
I reverted to Islam when I was 15 Alhamdulillah (The Praise belongs to God). So, before you ask:
No, I am not a terrorist
No, Iam not a fundamentalist, an extremist, nor a fanatic. I have a comfortably moderate view of Islam, and I like it that way.
No, I do not hate America. I love my country. It's the greatest country in the world.
No, I do not hate Jews. I am a jew (Sephardim aka "Brown Jews") and proud of it.
No, I do not speak "Muslim," though I am learning Arabic.
No, I do not drink, smoke, or do drugs.
No, I do not eat pork.
No, I do not think white people are the devil. As a Muslim, I love all people, white, red, yellow, olive, tan, black, brown, caramel, mocha... but not purple. That's messed up.
Yes, I do believe in God.
Yes, I do believe in Jesus (as).
Yes, I really do have five prayers a day, yes, I have the rug too, and yes, I do put my face to the ground like that, but only for part of the prayer.
Yes, I do fast during the month of Ramadan, and it's great.
Yes, I do plan to make Hajj to Mecca one day insha'Allah
Yes, I do go to a mosque, and yes it is the one next to the sushi place.
I'm a sophmore at Queens College. I drive 45 minutes to and from Flushing, time I use to listen to my iPod, make important phone calls, text message, write lyrics in the form of a text and then save them as drafts, and, of course, floss. I'm studying to be a Social Studies teacher, so I'm majoring in History as well as minoring in Education and Theater. Plus, I'm taking Arabic and thats's awesome... That's all I really care to say about that.
I sing. A lot. I need to sing all the time or I become sad. Sometimes I sing while I play guitar, or even piano. I have this tendency to break into song in almost any situation or setting. I love to sing showtunes. I've discovered that there are certain "showtune triggers" that make me start singing, including drumsticks, nightsticks, Stolichnaya, light, counting in even numbers, etc.
Really I have a problem, I'm addicted to performance. Speaking of theater, I love drama (by the way, that was my transition. Did you like it? I hope you did). I'm an Alumnus Officer of The Bethpage Masquers Guild. I'll never really leave though. I really hope that one day I can teach at BHS so that I can work with The Maquers Guild insha'Allah. That is my plan to never leave, mwahahahaha! So basically, we are awesome because we say so, and thats all you need to know. Most of my best friends are drama folk and they are the most fun people to be around. They are the reason I didn't want to leave High School. I pray that I never loose touch with them insha'Allah. I plan to continue in theater throughout life. Sometimes I do shows at The Cultural Arts Playhouse in Old Bethpage.
I love Music. All different kinds of music, but I mostly listen to showtunes, hip hop, anything thats cool to pay on guitar, comedy music, just anything good. I love lyrically well written songs, but sometimes you need a great song where the words make no sense. I think it's unfortunate that people call the words to a song "the lyrics" as opposed to "the lyric," but there's nothing I can do about it. I'm just one man. Sometimes I write songs, rhymes, and poems, but I rarely finish them, and, even when I do, I decide they're not good enough to do anything with. Insha'Allah I'll record something soon. As far as Hip Hop, I only listen to concious, alternative, intelligent, high-quality Hip Hop, 95% of whick is never played on the radio. That's because the radio rap is mostly commercialized, materialistc, video ho, bling bling, corporate-controlled, unnecessarily vulgar, talentless Hip POP. If you want to listen to the radio, turn to Air America Radio (1600 AM in New York.)
I am very passionate about politics and, like with religion, if you bring it up around me, it might be the beginning of a discussion lasting all afternoon. BE WARNED! I've been a democrat since 4th grade, and I'm generally liberal, though conservative on some social issues. As of now, I'm going with Barack Obama for the '08 election
I dont believe in the zodiac claim that gravitational/electromagnetic forces from cellestial bodies has some effect on the developing brain, shaping one's personality, which is the modernized version, and I certainly dont believe that the sun, moon, planets, and stars are actually gods tht make decisions for the lives of mortals, as they did in Ancient Persia, which is where astrology actually comes from. However, that being said, I am very much an Aquarius.
I've always been a hopeless romantic; I cant help it. I fall. I'm sick at constructing metaphors and analogies, involving anything from war and imperialism, to cups of Starbucks Shaken Passionfruit Iced Tea Lemonade with only ice left, to British Oatmeal! My best and most common analogies are love related
I tend to compare myself to characters from shows and movies. I am a lot like Robbie Hart (Broadway version), except for the hair, the cool band, and the piano tie. I'm kind of like Stanley Ipkiss, but instead of a green mask, I have a background in musical theater that makes me act like that. I've always thought of myself as a mix between Mark Cohen and Tom Collins, with a dash of Roger Davis, just for good measure, but everytime I take one of those "Which RENT Character Are You?" tests, I ALWAYS get Angel. Go figure. I'm definitely Schlomo Metzenbaum.
I love language. I want to learn a bunch of languages so I can beone of those people who just know madd lanuages. I would like to learn Hebrew, Greek, Hindi/Urdu, and French. When people unintentionally misuse the English language, it aggrevates me. Ironically, I frequently misspeak, but I do it really good! I speak Spanish sorta kinda, pero basante para conversacion. I don't speak Arabic (yet), but I insert Arabic words and phrases into everyday speech. Sometimes I mix English, Spanish, and Arabic, sometimes accidentally, but more often for my own entertainment.
Progresso Chicken Barley Soup is quite good.
I like to make funny things. So do some of my friends. Sometimes, we get together and make funny things. we are called Oddly Shaped Pool (The official site will be back up soon insha'Allah.)
I live a busy life, and, between work, school, shows, and completing in depth studies in the field of cyrptozooligy, I rarely get too much of a brake. Though, in my my free time, when I can get it, I enjoy stablizing governments, repairing the economy, and negotiating peace agreements between waring nations. Also, I'm thinking of writing a new musical comedy about the dangers of redundancy, and I shall call it, "Fever Madness." Then I hope to write a series of racist homophobic antisemitic children's books that deal with the issue of tolerance.
Whenever I rant, be sure to tune out, unless you enjoy that sort of thing.
Who I'd like to meet: new people who share my interests, or maybe have different interests that I can learn about.
Plus, my friends, who I already like, so less work for me.
