Abnegation was a hard-, metal-, death-, grind-core band from Erie, Pennsylania that played thoughout the 90's. The band began as a vision of Jason 'Iggy' Imig & Paul Nowoczynski as a vehicle to showcase their hard-line vegan straight-edge politics. Passionate & explosive live & on their recordings, Abnegation devastated fans all over the United States & the rest of world. Their lyrics & music, delivered with anger, urgency & a brutal kind of desperation, became an alter for expressing their strong opinions on issues such as animal rights, abortion, veganism, environmentalism, & drug abuse. Their intensity & energy were an intoxicating spectacle to see & hear.
After building a solid fan-base amongst the Lake Effect hardcore scene, they spent years recording & touring, playing alongside other Erie bands like Brother's Keeper, Disciple, & Shockwave, as well as acts from Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Syracuse & others from all around the country. Abnegation put out brutal, punishing music on releases like ‘A Life for a Life’, ‘Extinguish the Sickness’ (94), ‘In the Eye of the Storm’ (95), a split with Pittsburgh's Chapter (96), & many compilation contributions. Hypnotic drumming full of menacing fills, explosive crashes & gut-wrenching breakdowns mixed with precise, technical guitars & screeching vocals gave them an unmistakable sound that brutalized fans. Elements of death, speed, & thrash metal were infused in their music long before 'metal-core' was the norm. Many will remember their electrifying performances & nobody will ever forget their jaw dropping set at the Cleveland hardcore festival. In the days of Snapcase, Earth Crisis & other big name straightedge bands, Abnegation carved out their own prominent place.
Over the years the band struggled through line-up changes & ever changing ideologies which caused a lot of internal conflicts. Soon the band's work began to suffer. However, they forged on. But as time went on they played out less & less. As the band’s inner turmoil increased, they began to delve into darker territory & their material changed into a more aggressive, death style sludge metal. In the final days the band released the full length LP ‘Versus of the Bleeding’ (97). It was to be a final bludgeoning assault on the senses that capped off a great career. Through it all Abnegation never lost any of the intensity they began with & even today, they are often cited as an influence on many current bands & their releases are still highly sought after commodities. Amongst their fans & friends, Abnegation will live on in our hearts & memories forever!!!
