WINNER: INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION 2005 (JAZZ CATEGORY)
Vibrant, confident, and just damn exciting. Not only is Wilson a first class trumpeter, he's extremely accomplished at singing, rapping and scatting too. THE INDEPENDENT
Truly astonishing and, what's more, he can sing. A fiery, colourful trumpeter and a gracefully cajoling soul singer, Wilson is a definite hot ticket. THE GUARDIAN
The definitive Jazz Warrior ECHOES
Abram Wilson... keeping jazz young and reaching out to a new audience. A trail of audiences wowed by his lyrical, yet turbo-charged solos. A powerful debut which combines all the eloquence you'd expect from a New Orleans trumpet player with a deep love of in-the-pocket swing, soul and hip hop. JAZZWISE
**** A smart debut. Jazz Warriors energy and diversity should give itsome commercial success, especially with younger listeners otherwise alienated by neo-classical bores. Being a trumpet player in New Orleansis like being a football player from Brazil, and Wilson certainly possessesthe vocab, flair and slickness youd expect. JAZZWISE
Its inconceivable that Wilsons engaging debut wont meet with success. This is crossover music of the highest order, nourished by jazz, hip hop, R&B and New Orleans (funk) roots. METRO
***** An astonishingly accomplished debut. Not only does his melt-in the mouth horn stride comfortably over bop, soul, tango New Orleans-style and other genres in his excellent originals, but he can sing, scat and rap very well too. Sensational. My album of the year. THE INDEPENDENT
A scintillating debut which elegantly reconciles modern acoustic jazz with hip hop, R&B and reggae. BETJAZZ.COM
One of the most exciting trumpet players on the scene today. Wilson is an emerging talent with great potential. His vocal skills, along with great trumpet chops, thrust him into the new arena of jazz hopefuls. Jazz Warrior is a solid debut featuring a group of musicians who can play with the best of them. JAZZREVIEW.COM
An impressive debut CD. BILLBOARD
A splendid debut. Wilson plays trumpet in true Crescent City style. Spits out swaggering riffs, melodies, improvisations and modern grooves. JAZZTIMES
Abram Wilson defies the gnome of jazz complacency. THE VOICE 88.7fm (US)
From the Big Easy, via the Big Apple, to the Big Smoke, Abram Wilson the definitive Jazz Warrior is going to be BIG! A young musician whose desire to network jazz, funk and rap avoids the standard and largely fatuous attempts at urban hip-bop. ECHOES
• Saturday 14 November - The Albany, LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL
The incredible trumpeter and vocalist Abram Wilson was born in Arkansas and raised in Louisiana, where he attended the famed New Orleans Center for the Performing Arts, like Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr before him. After appearing with Roy Hargrove and blues legend Ruth Brown, Wilson moved to London in 2002, where he has since become an essential part of the Dune Records roster, alongside Soweto Kinch, Denys Baptiste and Jazz Jamaica. In April 2006, Wilson was judged (by Sonny Rollins and John Scofield, no less) the winner in the jazz category of the International Songwriting Competition.
Ride!, commissioned by Cheltenham Jazz Festival under the Jerwood Rising Stars Programme, tells the story of a young man's journey from his hometown in the Delta to the thrills of the big city, with Wilson's explosive 10-strong orchestra featuring three bands in one (Abram Wilson Sextet, Delta Blues Trio and Londorleans Brass Band), playing everything from brass-band jazz and delta blues to acoustic hip-hop. Also features a prologue by Rhythm & Blues giant, Dr John, setting the scene for the Ride of your life!
'Ride' is killer. He's a bad mother*!%&^ who can play his ass off. Dr John
'Life Paintings' sees Abram Wilson working with a broad, vibrant palette of musical colours and textures, painting 'pictures' inspired by his own life experiences, expressing themes that are deeply personal yet universally familiar. Altogether a masterful set of compelling, absorbing and wonderfully melodic compositions that draw strongly upon his African-American jazz roots, yet 'bring inflections to the pulse of a song that remind us of the complexity and certain mystery of rhythm in black music.' (Echoes).
