Abram Wilson

Bio:

The incredible trumpeter and vocalist Abram Wilson was born in Arkansas and raised in Louisiana, where he attended the famed New Orleans Center for the Performing Arts, like Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr before him. After appearing with Roy Hargrove and blues legend Ruth Brown, Wilson moved to London in 2002, where he has since become an essential part of the Dune Records roster, alongside Soweto Kinch, Denys Baptiste and Jazz Jamaica. In April 2006, Wilson was judged (by Sonny Rollins and John Scofield, no less) the winner in the jazz category of the International Songwriting Competition.

Ride!, commissioned by Cheltenham Jazz Festival under the Jerwood Rising Stars Programme, tells the story of a young man's journey from his hometown in the Delta to the thrills of the big city, with Wilson's explosive 10-strong orchestra featuring three bands in one (Abram Wilson Sextet, Delta Blues Trio and Londorleans Brass Band), playing everything from brass-band jazz and delta blues to acoustic hip-hop. Also features a prologue by Rhythm & Blues giant, Dr John, setting the scene for the Ride of your life!

'Life Paintings' sees Abram Wilson working with a broad, vibrant palette of musical colours and textures, painting 'pictures' inspired by his own life experiences, expressing themes that are deeply personal yet universally familiar. Altogether a masterful set of compelling, absorbing and wonderfully melodic compositions that draw strongly upon his African-American jazz roots, yet 'bring inflections to the pulse of a song that remind us of the complexity and certain mystery of rhythm in black music.' British Jazz Award 2007 for Ride!
Abram's album, Ride! Ferris Wheel To The Modern Day Delta bagged an award for Dune on 18 September at the British Jazz Awards 2007. The awards, voted for by the public and now in their 19th year, were hosted by Big Bear Music at The Sands, Gainsborough.
