Level With Mortisabstract

Mortisabstract is the kind of guy that is humble, honest and friendly. He has a lot to say inside of his head and you can listen to it on his new album, “Level With Me.”
Mortisabstract’s music is complex and spiritual; yielding his grasp of life as he sees it. Independence, faith and life’s greater efforts are all covered in “Level With Me,” produced by, Joshua “Describe” Chacon. This spoken word artist is a perfect fit for poetry slams and a great album to unwind to at the end of the day and has Christian features such as 202, GloryI and Describe.
“I am a Christian, who loves to write [and] rap,” says Mortisabstract who began his musical venture in ‘98, with his cousin in the basement, making beats for their group, Vile Logix
. Then Mortisabstract began his solo career.
“My sound is more cerebral and abstract with a spiritual touch.” Mortisabstract’s musical influences vary from Pigeon John to Portishead. “I am serious as any emcee out that is trying to get a point across. To me it is about having a voice and believing in it, trying to get it to as many people as possible.”
Driven to teach others about Christ, Mortisabstract now has a different sway to his musical communication, “I realize that people have normal problems. My music is about life’s struggles.”
“Be yourself, if you’re crazy, be crazy – if you don’t know then be eclectic,” concludes Mortisabstract, nice touch.

"DON'T BE LAZY"

When I got back from lunch (turkey and pepper jack, you nosy bastard) there was a CD on my chair by a hip-hop artist from Elk Grove named Mortisabstract. At first, I was a little put off by the busy wordplay, industrial synth and jarring drum patterns; the music isn’t readily accessible. But that’s not a bad thing—the composition spoke to me: “Don’t give up so easily, you lazy asshole,” it said. It was right.
And with each listen, I heard something new, like "Afterclap,” which utilizes an expertly produced beat with eerie effects. Mortisabstract’s flow sounds like early Anticon: inward, heavy with wordplay and metaphor. The muted blues riff paired with Mortis’ abstract rhymes on “Warning Shot” is undeniably masterful.
As it turns out, Level With Me is full of poetry, a really good female emcee by the name of Glory I and some of the most interesting production I’ve heard in a while. It’s intellectually challenging hip-hop you have to learn to appreciate; it grows on you, like religion. Which reminds me: The downside is the creepy-ass Christian lyrics (e.g., “First veer humble then you’ll become truly wise”). Hint: Listen to Slayer’s South of Heaven directly after listening to Mortisabstract’s Level With Me. It balances things out nicely.
