Ask Academy of Soul to describe their sound and a barrage of chalk and cheese descriptives are thrown out by the band. However they nod in agreement to a statement of ‘simply ourselves’ in identifying their uniquely phenomenal live sound that has gained them accolades across the
country for being one the freshest bands in the UK. The unique make-up of the band has created an inimitable sound that weaves a thread of creativity and innovation, and is fast capturing the eyes and ears of music lovers everywhere. The four-piece band is made up of drummer Marc ‘Da General’ Baptiste, guitarist Andrew Higgs, bass guitarist Jeremiah Samuel and saxophonist Ian Hubbard who all have star quality in spades. The band members were initially brought together as musicians for the talented singer/songwriter Jlovemusic, playing at some of London’s hottest live music venues to incredible crowd reactions. The band have featured as 'house band' at numerous events in London and supported a plethora of up and coming talent coming out of the capital. The four central members have continued to grow and gel as a tight unit, creating fresh music with a unique stamp, however the family feel to the band means guest musicians are always a regular feature. These immensely talented musicians have their own treasure troves of musical gems and influences that are brought to life in the music they play together. From Stevie Wonder to Soweto Kinch, Jaco Pastorius to Marcus Miller, George Benson to Sway, Wes Montgomery to The Chilli Peppers, Charlie Parker to Jimi Hendrix and Lynden David Hall, the inspiration and dynamics of the Academy of Soul are what gives them their own definitive flavour.
