2ACCESS – The band
2ACCESS is a Canadian indie pop band (indie pop - a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the UK, quickly leading to similar revolution in the underground pop in the USA in the mid '80s).
Originally formed in Dracula’s kingdom, Transylvania (now part of the European Union), by vocalist and songwriter Anca Boieru, and keyboardist, songwriter and producer Romulus Boieru, 2ACCESS relocated to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 2005.
2ACCESS – Sound
From its inception, the band’s music has been intended to be, and ever since has been described as, "enjoyable, eloquent, and prevailing indie pop". Abundant instrumentation, dexterous production and mixing, highly literate and emotional lyrics, and fine, distinctive vocal tones set 2ACCESS apart from other bands in the music markets. The band's style evolves lately, towards a rather electronic-pop sound, occasionally combining elements of pop/rock opera, ballad, instrumental, or even theatrical.
2ACCESS – Career
Romulus Boieru showed musical talent since his early beginnings. He started playing piano as a child. He still cites a wide variety of musical likes and influences. Ranging from folk, to rhythm and blues, ballad, soft rock, instrumental, or singer/songwriter, his musical likes prompted him to write songs for various artists, while working hard on building up his musical career.
Still, most of the European record companies saw little prospect of commercial success in his first demo tape, which was rejected repeatedly. His first CD, Underground, was finally released in Transylvania in 2004. Two songs from this first album that were very popular are Kiss Of The Night and Loving Life. Various artists have interpolated these two songs into their repertoires and recordings.
Anca Boieru is the vocalist of this first album, which incorporates 10 songs. Like Romulus, Anca started her first piano and guitar lessons as a child. She took vocal training, which she continues to take today (2008) as a student at the Mount Royal Conservatory in Calgary, the class of Betty Hicks, an internationally renowned trainer and opera singer.
Anca and Romulus have recently surprised their fans by releasing their second album, titled “What Is Life?” This album was written, recorded, and produced in Calgary, with Anca as main songwriter and vocalist, and Romulus being the second songwriter, keyboardist, producer, and studio engineer.
2ACCESS – “What Is Life?” – The band’s second album
The 2ACCESS indie pop style develops with this album into a vibrant electronic-pop sound that combines elements of pop/rock opera, power ballad, and theatrical.
“Love keeps us alive, and gives us hope.” Says Anca Boieru. “This album is about love for what life is and love for each other, which makes our surroundings enjoyable and pleasant. Each song is meant to hearten up the listener. In its entirety, the album promotes love and hope, encouraging reveries of happy life led at its fullest. If I was to summarize our lyrics into an advice to our fans, I’d tell them that, before remembering 2ACCESS, they shouldn’t forget a land of music, a paradise of dreams, a land of make-believe in love – a most wanted world of which we’d all love to be part of.”
“What Is Life?” was released to online retailers before the actual release of the CD as part of the band’s reasoning touched on the increasingly blurry line between critics or judges and listeners or viewers, occurrence caused by Television shows like “American Idol”. At the same time, the online release would circumvent the album's inevitable leak, the band thought. And last, but not least, both Anca and Romulus believed indie-pop fans must be able to review and provide opinions of “What Is Life?” in a way comparable to the many critics’ judgments.
To date, the outcome of the release of “What Is Life” is not very far from their expectations, but one never knows, the reverse could come months down the road. Still, Anca and Romulus will not rant and rave onto any music Website or reviewer that would score their music low, nor will they pray to God for the death of criticism, musical judges, and music itself, as a consequence. They will continue to write, sing, play, and produce music, as they did since they were little children.
2ACCESS – What comes next?
Romulus is working on finalizing the third album of 2ACCESS that is an instrumental production. The release date is not scheduled yet, but it is not far – maybe September, the latest October 2008. “It’s colorful and includes a variety of themes, from dreamy piano, to cityscape, big-sky adventure, ethereal wonders, innocence, the big day, warm, and good-byes. The songs that will be released on our third album are meant to make wonderful backgrounds for TV shows, movies, documentaries, or even commercials.” Says Romulus.
