THE ACCORDION WORKSHOP GROUP MIDDLESBROUGH.
A HISTORY OF THE GROUP
In 1970/71 an article, in the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette by Adrian Bull, asked for any Accordion players or beginners interested in starting a regular meeting to learn, play or practise to meet at Thornaby Pavillion to discuss the idea.
About 75 people attended, all Accordionist's,with different diciplines and some young people who wished to learn to play.
We were eventually left with a nucleus of people which included Les Kerridge,Tom Baines,Shirley and Christine O'Rourke,Bob Simpson,Bob Frier and Arthur Metcalf and many more. Sadly some of these people are now deceased.
After meeting regularly every two weeks at the Thornaby Pavillion we were asked to entertain some pensioner groups and so the" Cleveland Accordionaires" were born! We played together over a period of over 30 years and became well known locally in the Teesside and surrounding area.
Over this period we sadly lost many of our younger players due to ongoing pressures of everyday life.
We used the Pavillion for 20 years but space became a problem and so in 1995 we moved to Stainton Memorial Hall in Stainton Village and continue to meet there to this day. In 2004 the Cleveland Accordionaires retired from entertaining local groups but we still meet every fortnight to play and enjoy ourselves.
We use the "Hall" as a concert venue and have hosted names from the accordion world such as, Pearl Fawcett-Adriano, Ron Hodgson and Julie Best,Gordon Glenn,Jack Embloe and Tony Compton,Alexander Korbakov,David Lukins,Harry Hussey,David Vernon,Steve Roxton and Lisa Lee Leslie.
A number of new members have joined us over the past few years and we encourage anyone with musical interests in the bellows type instrument to try us out.
The current program of music being played is displayed below.
Future concerts will also be posted.
In 2007 four members joined together to play music that would not have been suitable for the larger group of players meeting in the workshop. This group who call themselves Quad Accord have played in a number of local concerts, including for the Workshop, and are looking for future venues to play their arrangements.
The program of music being played by the main group on Sat afternoon's is listed below.
